On the 2nd April 1916, a trawler was blown up at sea, and Adams supported one of the crew named Tuplin until they were picked up by a boat.

On the 14th August 1915, Douglas Brough accidentally fell from the wharf into the Warri River in Southern Nigeria. Alidu jumped in, but in the darkness failed to find him.

On the 15th May 1916, a man named Butler fell overboard from a trawler off the Island of Tiree. There was a confused sea, and the small boat on board was disabled. Allman jumped after him but failed to reach him before he sank.

On the 30th May 1916, a woman accidentally fell from the bank into the Clyde at Govan, the depth being over 30 feet and the water foul. Anderson at once jumped in and rescued her in an unconscious state.

On the 2nd July 1916, a man was thrown into the river Tigris owing to his horse slipping when being watered, the depth being 15 feet, with a strong stream. Annis and Khan jumped in but failed to find him.

On the 22nd March 1916, a youth accidentally fell into a caisson at Rosyth, the depth of water being 27 feet. Archer jumped in and caught him, and both were then got out with a rope.

On the 15th November 1916, an Italian seaman was thrown into 30 feet of water by the capsizing of a lighter. Argent jumped in and caught him and they were then pulled out.

Aspinall, Algernon E.  Case 42373

On the 22nd April 1916, an old man of 77 threw himself into the Thames at Temple Steps. Aspinall jumped in and brought him out, but he did not recover.

Bastain, J.S.  2nd Officer HMS Trevethoe.  Case 42247

On the 9th December 1915, a man of the ASC fell overboard from a transport at Salonika. Bastain jumped in, but was unable to effect the rescue and the man was drowned.

On the 7th January 1916, a man accidentally fell into the Granville Dock at Dover, the depth being 13 feet and the night very dark. Beamish jumped in and kept him afloat till they were got out with a rope.

On the 18th May 1916, a man was thrown into the sea in the Channel by the capsizing of a boat. Belton jumped overboard from his ship and supported him till they were picked up.

On the 11th October 1916, a woman threw herself into the Thames at Chelsea and was carried out 20 yards from the side. In full uniform, Bence jumped in and got her to the side, but she did not recover.

On the 1st November 1915, owing to an accident when hoisting a boat, six men belonging to HMS Essex were thrown into the sea. Benson jumped in an assisted in getting all the men on board.

On the 30th December 1915, the SS Persia was torpedoed and sunk off the Island of Crete, many of the passengers being thrown into the sea. One of these, a French lady, was becoming exhausted when Berryman, who was also in the water, assisted in keeping her afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 11th August 1915, a man, when going on board his vessel in the Tyne at Hebburn, fell in between the vessel and the quay, where he sank under a boat. Birks jumped in, and diving found him and brought him up, after which he was pulled out.

On the 31st January 1916, H C Ham, A.B., fell from the quay at Parkeston in a dangerous position between his ship and the quay, the night being very dark. Blackburn and Tyrrel at once went in and with the help of a lifebuoy got him out.

On the 21st January 1916, a woman threw herself from the Suspension Bridge into the Clyde at Glasgow, the night being dark and the river in flood. Blower swam out from the bank and succeeded in saving her.

On the 9th September 1916, a boy was washed from the slope of the pier into the Humber at Hull and was carried out about 20 yards. Booth plunged in and rescued him.

On the 22nd May 1916, a child fell down a well at Badsey, near Evesham, the depth being 18 feet with 11 feet of water in it. Bott jumped in and managed to get the child out and then got out herself.

On the 3rd November 1915, a man accidentally fell into the dock at Grimsby, the depth being 20 feet and the night dark. Bradford jumped in and supported him until they were picked up.

On the 8th November 1915, a man named Barker in trying to swim ashore from a boat at Diamond Island, India, got into difficulty in the choppy sea. Braird, who was in front of him, turned back and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

On the 8th September 1916, a boy fell from the bridge a height of 30 feet into the Lagan at Belfast. Brown jumped from the bridge and was successful in saving him.

On the 29th July 1916, a man while bathing in the sea at Swakopmund, got into difficulty and was unable to regain the shore. Bult swam out to him and eventually brought him to land.

On the 1st May 1916, Pte C Reynolds, Norfolk Regt., fell into the river Somme, in France, the night being dark and the water deep. Butler plunged in, but after diving failed to find him, and he was drowned.

On the 28th August 1916, a woman accidentally fell from a steamer in the Solent, the depth being 6 fathoms, with an ebb tide. Chambers, on the steamer, at once jumped after her, but failed to reach her before she sank.

On the 5th June 1916, a man of the Highland Light Infantry got into difficulty while bathing in the Shatt-el-Arab at Basra and was carried out 30 yards by the current. Chambers went in fully clothed and succeeded in saving him.

On the 8th August 1916, a seaman fell overboard from his ship at sea off the Spurn Light, there being a moderate swell at the time. Clarke jumped in after him but failed to reach him before he sank.

On the 18th September 1916, two men were accidentally thrown into the Medway at Sheerness and were carried out 80 to 100 yards by the tide. Coke went in from his ship and succeeded in saving one of them, the other being drowned.

On the 2nd April 1916, a man and a woman were in a boat which was capsized on the Lea at Clapton, the depth being 15 feet. Cook swam out and kept both afloat until a boat reached them.

On the 15th October 1916, a boy accidentally fell into the harbour at Leith and was being carried away by the current. Percy Cadman went in to his help but got into difficulty and lost his life. Cox then went in but failed to find him.

On the 21st April 1916, two children got into a position of great danger at the top of the quarry at Aberavon. Croucher, Howell Harris, and Idwal T. Rees went to their help and eventually succeeded in saving them.

On the 21st February 1916, Sepoy Abdul fell overboard from his ship in the harbour at Suez, Dalawal at once jumped in and caught him and they were then got on board.

On the 10th February 1916, a man named Taylor fell into the dock at Halifax the depth being 20 feet and the water-level 10 feet below the quay. Dart jumped in and caught him and they were got out with a rope.

On the 3rd June 1916, a boy got into deep water in the Hooghly River, India. Kangali Charan De went into his help, but was unable to save him. Nital Chand De then went in and succeeded in bringing him out.

On the 23rd June 1916, a naval stoker fell into the Shatt-el-Arab at Basra when trying to board a boat at the pier. Delap jumped in fully clothed and succeeded in saving him.

On the 20th May 1916, a naval stoker fell into No.3 Basin, Chatham Dockyard, the depth being 40 feet and the night dark. Devlin jumped in and caught him, and they were got out with a rope.

On the 6th August 1916, a woman in trying to board a boat from a steamer fell into the Demerara River at Dora, where she was carried under the vessel. Donovan at once plunged in and diving brought her up and she was taken on board.

On the 20th October 1916, a man of the C.F.A. was unhorsed on watering parade at Aveluy, France, and sank in deep water. Duffy dived in twice, but failed to release him from some barbed wire at the bottom, and he was drowned.

On the 5th June 1916, a girl fell overboard from a steamer in the river at Georgetown, Demerara, the depth being 17 feet and a danger from sharks. Dunbar jumped in from his ship and succeeded in saving her.

On the 11th June 1916, two men were thrown into the Tigris by the capsizing of a boat, the depth being 18 feet and the current strong. Eagling and Singh swam out from the bank and succeeded in saving them.

On the 6th June 1916, a boy fell into the Leven at Renton and was being carried away by the current. Easdale, who has lost a leg, went in and with difficulty brought him out.

On the 19th March 1916, two men when bathing in the harbour at Kilandini, East Africa, where swept out a quarter of a mile by the current. Edwards swam out and brought one man in, and then with Ali went out and kept the other afloat till a boat reached them.

On the 9th August 1916, a young woman while bathing in the sea at Haverigg took cramp about 200 yards from shore. Edwards swam out and brought her to shore in an unconscious state.

On the 12th March 1916, Pte. Williams, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, fell overboard from a steamer into the river Tigris. Thomas at once jumped in and was successful in saving him.

On the 6th March 1916, a soldier accidentally fell into the harbour at Townsville, Queensland. Ellwood jumped in and supported him till they were got out with a rope.

On the 5th February 1916, a man accidentally fell from the wharf into the Tyne at Wallsend in a dangerous position between a vessel and the quay. Flynn jumped in and kept him afloat until they were got out with ropes.

On the 10th October 1916, a man in trying to board his ship from a boat fell into the sea at Ardrossan. Foy went to his help and kept him afloat till a boat reached them, but the man did not recover.

On the 17th October 1916, a man accidentally fell overboard from HMS Weymouth at sea. Freeman-Mitford went after him and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 9th April 1916, two girls were thrown into the lake at Killorglin owing to the sinking of a canoe. James O'Reilly, who was also in the canoe, managed to keep both above water until Galvin swam out and succeeded in taking them to land.

On the 24th January 1916, owing to the sudden listing of a launch, a man named Cassan was thrown into the Laggan at Belfast, the depth being about 20 feet. Gilbert jumped in and succeeded in swimming with him to land.

On the 9th April 1916, a man fell overboard from a boat in Portsmouth Harbour about 100 yards from the Gosport side. Gouch swam out, and getting into the boat pulled the man on board.

On the 30th August 1916, a lady got into difficulty while bathing at Croyde Bay, Devon, the current being very strong. H A Tinker and Edward Thorne went in to help, but got into difficulty and both were drowned. Gough then went in and succeeded in saving her.

On the 14th March 1916, two men named Wright and Gray were in a boat which was capsized in the Suez Canal. Gray got on board a lighter and then jumped in to help Wright who was holding on to the tow-rope but failed to reach him, and was picked up by a native boat.

On the 15th September 1915, two women, in order to avoid meeting the soldiers, went into the Tigris, in Mesopotamia, and were swept away. Gretton went in and brought them out one at a time.

On the 17th August 1916, a man in trying to land from a boat fell into the Thames at Butler's Wharf, near the Tower Bridge. Guy jumped in and held him till a rope was thrown and they were got into a boat.

On the 6th August 1916, a woman accidentally fell overboard from her punt in the Cherwell at Oxford. Hall, who was suffering from wounds, jumped in and rescued her.

On the 29th April 1916, R J Rice in trying to clear a boat from the gangway of a transport fell into the Tigris at Busra (sic.). Hamed jumped in and kept him afloat till they were picked up eight minutes later.

On the 21st October 1916, a man in the intense darkness fell into the canal at Enfield Lock, the depth being 30 feet. Hancock jumped in and caught him, but when got out he did not recover.

On the 29th January 1916, a seaman was  Seen in difficulties in the water near his ship which was on fire from an explosion. Harton jumped in from a raft 50 yards away and caught him, but the oil on the water took fire and he had to let go in order to save himself, the man being drowned.

On the 11th January 1916, a man was accidentally knocked into the dock at Havre, the night being very dark. Hately jumped in and held him till they were got out with a lifebuoy.

On the 22nd August 1916, a boy fell into the Thames from the steps at the end of Westminster Bridge and was carried out some 20 yards. Hayward swam out but failed to find him and was himself picked up by a boat.

On the 21st December 1915, a sailor fell overboard from a small boat in the Boat Basin, Devonport, the depth being 30 feet, with a 3-knot tide. Heath swam out and getting into the boat pulled the man on board.

On the 1st April 1916, a boat capsized at Port Mudros, throwing the crew into the sea, which was rough. Hendry and Hayden jumped in from their ship, but the survivors were picked up by a boat before the men could reach them.

On the 23rd April 1916, a man was swept away while trying to cross the Barbador River, Sierra Leone, and was carried out about 70 yards. Hewitt swam out and was successful in saving him.

On the 1st September 1916, a man and a woman were in difficulty in the sea at Kilkee, the woman being about 50 yards and the man about 30 yards out. Hickey swam out and brought the woman in, and again going out he rescued the man.

On the 19th January 1916, Pte Doherty, Connaught Rangers, fell into the Waddi Nullah on the river Tigris, and was being carried away by the swift current. Hobbs jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

Hollingsworth, W.H.  Chief Petty Officer.  Case 42440

On the 7th April 1916, a seaman fell overboard from HMS Astraea, in the Cameroon River, West Africa, the night being dark and the current strong. Hollingsworth jumped in and got him to a buoy and they were picked up ten minutes after.

Holt, Charles E.  RNR.  Case 43004

On the 27th August 1916, a vessel was blown up by a mine at sea, the crew being thrown into the water. One of these named Eagle, was unable to swim, and Holt, with the help of some wreckage, kept him afloat till they were picked up.

On the 26th November 1915, a rowing boat struck a rock, filled and sank about 80 yards from shore at Mudros, throwing its occupant, Patrick Kilty, into the heavy sea running. Horne and Wray swam out, but finding him dead returned to land, having much difficulty in getting in.

On the 31st July 1915, three boys were swept away while bathing in the sea near Bombay. George House, Gangaram Rama, and Belli T Shaik all went in, and, in spite of the rough sea, succeeded in saving one boy.

On the 29th May 1916, a man fell overboard from his ship in Gartha Voe, Shetland Isles. Howard jumped in but was clutched and failed to effect his rescue.

On the 5th June 1916, Pte. J Cowan, Gordon Highlanders, in trying to swim across the Channel at the mouth of the Dee at Aberdeen got into difficulty. Pte. T Paton went to his help but could not bring him in. Hughes then swam out and effected the rescue.

On the 31st May 1916, a girl threw herself into the harbour at Havre, the depth being 30 feet. Hunter jumped in and supported her till they were picked up by a boat.

Huntington, Bert.  Deckhand.  Case 42310

On the 6th January 1916, a trawler had been blown up by a mine, and W Barber, a Petty Officer, was  Seen in the water in a sinking state. Huntington, on another trawler, at once jumped in but failed to reach him and was himself picked up in an exhausted state.

On the 8th March 1916, a man of the North Staffs Regt. threw himself into the Tigris at Basra. Hutchings jumped in but failed to reach him before he sank.

On the 23rd September 1916, a boy fell into the Thames at Woolwich and was carried out about 30 yards by the strong ebb tide. Hutchinson jumped in and succeeded in bringing him to land.

On the 13th July 1916, three ladies while bathing in the sea at Rhosneigr, Anglesea, were carried away by the current. Irwin swam out and succeeded in bringing one to shore, the others being drowned.

On the 18th August 1916, Pte. C Kelly while landing from a boat fell into the river Tigris. Jevans swam out from the bank and rescued him.

On the 20th May 1915, two men were swept away while trying to cross a flooded river in British East Africa. Jibril went in twice and succeeded in bringing out both men.

On the 4th September 1915, a girl accidentally fell into the Tyne at Newcastle, and was carried down by the current. Johnston, aged 11, jumped in and kept her afloat until a boat reached them.

On the 29th October 1916, a man fell into the dock at Grimsby, it being very dark at the time. Jones jumped in and caught him, but when got out he did not recover.

On the 14th August 1916, an insane man jumped overboard from his ship at sea. Jubb, of the ship, went after him and caught him, but when picked up nearly half an hour later the man did not recover.

On the 17th June 1916, an aeroplane fell into the sea at Montrose, and the occupant who was injured got into difficulty in trying to reach land. Keen swam out and assisted him to land.

On the 23rd August 1915, a child fell into a river in India, there being a very strong current and the depth 40 feet. Keramatulla jumped in and caught the child, and they were picked up nearly half a mile down stream.

On the 13th March 1916, a wounded Sepoy fell overboard from a ship into the river Tigris. Khan jumped in and was successful in saving him.

On the 2nd July 1915, a man of the Gurkha Rifles was swept away when trying to cross the River Euphrates by a rope. Khan jumped in from a boat and rescued him in an exhausted state.

Khan, Nawab.  Driver 10th Mule Corps.  Case 43014

On the 10th September 1916, a man was washing in shallow water in the Karum River, Persia, when he was seized by a shark. Khan at once went to his help and succeeded in liberating him and dragging him out, but he died soon after.

On the 14th September 1916, a woman fell from a boat into the Thames at Twickenham. Kirke, who has lost a leg in action, jumped in and succeeded in saving her.

On the 1st February 1916, a seaman named Anderson was thrown into the sea at Muscat by the swamping of a boat. Kivell swam out and with much difficulty got him to shore.

On the 2nd August 1916, a boy accidentally fell into the Thames at Lambeth in a dangerous position between a barge and the quay. Lampert, aged 64, jumped in but failed to find him.

Lawrence, George.  Seaman RNR.  Case 42315

On the 10th January 1916, a man accidentally fell from a floating gangway into the Shat-el-Arab in Mesopotamia. Lawrence plunged in and caught him and they were eventually got on board a motor-boat.

On the 3rd November 1916, a man, named Scoble, was thrown into the sea at Falmouth by the capsizing of a boat, the distance from shore being 150 yards. Lea swam out and rescued him in an unconscious state.

On the 24th September 1916, a number of persons were thrown into the water at Washingborough owing to the ferry boat capsizing. Charles Lloyd, Percy J H Allen, Thomas Bryan, Thomas E M Page, and Ernest M Burton all went in and succeeded in saving several lives.

On the 11th September 1916, a boy named Drew got into difficulty in the river at Teignmouth, and a boat with six persons on board which went to his help capsized and H F Ricketts, Constable, Metropolitan Police, lost his life. Loosemore and W T S Hitchcock then went in and rescued three persons, the others being picked up by a boat.

On the 21st March 1916, a man entered a manhole to clean the valves in a sewer at Christchurch, and being overcome by foul gas fell to the bottom of the manhole, a depth of 30 feet. On the 31st October 1915, a seaman fell overboard from his ship at sea off the Gallipoli Peninsula, the night being dark. Woolyrch and Dockett jumped in and kept him afloat until a boat reached them.

Wright, W.  3rd Engineer SS Lord Derby.  Case 42404

On the 18th April 1916, a fireman when going out to his ship fell overboard from the launch at Baltimore, USA. Wright jumped in and succeeded in holding him till they were picked up. C Walton, A.B., also went in but failed to reach the man.
