Adams, Wm.   Bronze Clasp Case 29730

On the 14th September 1898, Charles Millar was bathing in 11 feet of water at Gorleston, and could not regain the land. Adams swam out and saved him.

Adkins, John W. Waterman.   Case 29323

On the 7th February 1898, three boys were at play in the timber pond at Hull, when they fell into the water. Two managed to scramble out, but the third was carried away. C.W.Robinson plunged in to his aid, but took cramp and was drowned. At great risk, Adkins went in and succeeded in saving the boy.

In July 1898, an Italian soldier was bathing from the beach at Canea, Crete, when he sank in 20 feet of water 100 yards from shore. Almond swam out, and at great risk dived three times, but was unable to effect the rescue.

Angus, William. Painter.   Case 29525

On the 21st June 1898, while HMS Albion was being launched from the yard of the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company at Blackwall, a huge wave was raised which carried away a platform on which about 150 persons were gathered to witness the launch. The depth of water was about 14 feet, and there was great risk of being struck by baulks of floating timber. Angus, of Bow, sprang in and saved eight persons who were struggling in the water.

Arthur, James. Boatman.   Case 29429

On the 8th March 1898, a boat with several men on board capsized near the head of the falls on the Potaro River, British Guiana; nine men were at once drowned. The boat to which one man clung then struck a rock about 50 yards from the the bank, 24 feet deep, strong current. Arthur was drifted down in his boat , the rope being made fast higher up. With much difficulty and danger he reached the man and rescued him.

On the 26th March 1898, John Cleaves accidentally walked over the embankment into the river at Dartmouth. There was a blinding rain, and very cold at the time. Balkham at once plunged in fully clothed, and at great risk effected the rescue.

On the 8th August 1898, a man walked into the dock at Swansea. Hearing the splash Barton, at great risk, jumped in and held him up till a rope was got and they were pulled up.

Bennett, W.J. Dock Constable.   Case 29633

On the 20th August 1898, Christopher Cohen, while under the influence of liquor, jumped into the dock at Tilbury, intending to swim to his ship, but became exhausted and called for help. Bennett promptly sprang in, and with difficulty brought him to the quay, where he was hauled up in an unconscious state.

On the 20th August 1898, a boy fell into the Royal Dock, Grimsby, the depth of water being 24 feet. Berry, at great risk, plunged in and effected his rescue.

Blundon, Arthur.   Case 29405

On the 2nd May 1898, Annie Slaughter threw herself into the sea from the pier at Worthing. Blundon swam out, and at great risk supported her in the water for 20 minutes, when they were picked up by a boat.

On the 21st May 1898, Private J.Richardson, Scots Guards, fell from a boat into the Thames at Clewer Point. Bond swam out and supported him in the water till they were picked up by a boat.

Boswell, Henry C. An Inspector in the Govt. Service.   Case 29391

On the 21st February 1898, a woman fell down a well 50 feet deep with 30 feet of water in it, at Camp Malegaon, Bombay, India. Boswell jumped down and supported her till a rope was lowered, and they were pulled out.

Bowen, Private.   Bronze Clasp Case 29682

On the 22nd July 1898, Private Tyler, 15th Hussars, fell from his horse while practising swimming in the pond at Aldershot. Lieut. Courage went to his assistance, but was clutched and in danger himself. Lieut. Bald and Bowen then went in and rescued Tyler, while Lieut. O.B.Walker plunged in and saved Courage.

Briggs, Edward. Farmer.      Case 29786

On the 21st September 1898, Ann Holgate threw herself into the Ribble at Walton-le-Dale, intending to commit suicide. Briggs, at great risk, plunged in, and after being carried 50 yards down stream reached the bank, where he at once used artificial respiration and was successful.

On the 6th August 1898, S.Donolly accidentally fell into the sea at Balbriggan. Brotherton ran a considerable distance, and plunging in succeeded in saving him.

On the 10th March 1898, Private P.Maguire, of the same battalion, was asleep on a barge, when he accidentally rolled off into the Nile at Korosko. Carlisle and Galloway, together with Privates H.Campbell, F.Browning and C.Grant, all of the same battalion, at once went to his assistance, and among them managed to bring him to the bank.

On the 16th August 1898, a boy was washed into the river at Hammersmith by the swell of a passing steamer. Cartwright at once dived in, and at great risk rescued the lad.

On the 22nd August 1898, John Lewis was bathing in the Bristol Channel at Nash, when he was seized by cramp 50 yards from shore in deep water. W.L.Davies, mason, swam out, but was overcome and drowned before reaching him, Cheverton then went out and, at great risk, brought him to shore.

Colborne, J.G.R.U. Capt. the Hon. South Staffordshire Regt.   Case 29325

On the 11th September 1897, a child accidentally fell into the river at Vancouver, British Columbia. Colborne, ADC to Gen. A.G.Montgomery Moore, plunged in from a bridge, a height of 20 feet, and caught and held the child till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 5th November 1897, Drummer John J. Moore, of the same battalion, was seen in the river at Dinapore, India, and when about 80 yards from the bank, he went under water. Collins and Conroy swam out, and with great difficulty and risk, brought him safe to the bank.

On the 24th August 1898, a boat belonging to HMS Stork was capsized about 300 yards from shore, off Alexandria, Egypt. Lieut. R.A.Norris was soon in difficulties, and called for help. Collins swam to his assistance, but was clutched and dragged under. A second attempt was also unsuccessful, and Lieut. Norris was drowned.

On the 2nd April 1898, a boy fell overboard from the pinnace of HMS Caledonia in the Firth of Forth. Cosgrove and Sawyer jumped after him, but were unable to effect a rescue, and were taken on board much exhausted.

Craig, Joseph E. R.I.C.   Case 29800

On the 25th July 1898, two men of the R.I.C. were bathing at Carrowmore, Co. Clare, when being caught by the current they were quickly carried out nearly a mile from shore. Craig, one of the men, made a gallant attempt to support his comrade, but in the end was unsuccessful, and only reached land with great difficulty.

Creaser, John W. Fisherman.   Case 29364

On the 25th March 1898, the lifeboat at Bridlington Quay was dashed against the sea wall, throwing the crew into the water. There was a heavy gale and a tremendous sea. Creaser took a rope and sprang into the boiling surf and caught one of the men named Hopper, and rescued him in a most exhausted state.

On the 6th September 1898, Miss E.O.Bull was bathing at Ballysodare Bay, Sligo, when she was caught by the strong undercurrent and swept 100 yards into 10 feet of water. The Crichtons, at great risk, swam out and with much difficulty effected the rescue.

de Mattos, Edward Guy.   Case 29643

On the 5th February 1898, a man jumped overboard from the SS Hecuba in Darvel Bay, British North Borneo, the depth 33 fathoms, 5 miles from land, and the water full of sharks. de Mattos at once went after him, and with difficulty supported him in the water till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 23rd March 1898, George Beecham, whose steamer was anchored in the Wash on fishery service, was in a small boat which capsized. He succeeded in reaching a beacon, where he held on. Donnison gallantly went to his assistance, and succeeded in taking him back to the steamer in an exhausted state

Drake, H.M. The Rev. Curate of Bideford.   Bronze Clasp Case 29418

On the 5th June 1898, Gilbert Rendel fell from a wall into the Torridge at Bideford; there was a strong tide running, the depth being 16 feet. Drake jumped in, and at great risk supported Rendel till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 12th November 1898, a boy fell into the Tyne at Newcastle, the current carrying him under a floating raft. Drane, at great risk, plunged in, and diving succeeded in saving the lad.

Dryden, James. Labourer.   Bronze Clasp Case 29618

On the 6th August 1898, a woman, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into the Tyne at Newcastle. Dryden sprang in from the quay, caught the woman, and took her to the side, where they were taken into a boat.

On the 29th March 1898, the Norwegian Brig Oscar was driven ashore at Garton Gap, Yorkshire, during a gale. Of the seven men on board, three reached the shore, one was drowned, and the remaining three were left on board in a helpless state. Dwyer, Sewell and Brown swam out to the ship, and succeeded in saving all the men. There was considerable danger from floating wreckage and the rough sea.

On the 5th September 1898, Gunner Hughes, R.A., was bathing in the sea at Malta, when, owing to the strong tide, he could not regain the land. Edwards swam out, and at great risk, succeeded in bringing him in.

Egan, John. Stevedore.   Case 29311

On the 3rd February 1898, Harry Challis accidentally fell into the harbour at Dover. Egan gallantly sprang in and with great difficulty supported him till a rope was got and they were both hauled out.

Feenan, Joseph. Boatman HM Coastguard.      Case 29552

On the 16th July 1898, a boat with three men on board was capsized about 500 yards off shore near Hastings. Feenan swam out and assisted them to hold on to the upturned boat till they were picked up.

Findlay, Hugh. 1st officer SS City of Vienna.   Case 29383

On the 22nd April 1898, Alexander Shand, a passenger on the same vessel, accidentally fell overboard off the coast of Spain. Findlay at once sprang after him, but on reaching him was told he could keep himself afloat. Findlay therefore turned, but on looking back Shand had sunk.

On the 25th May 1898, Dennis Brophy fell into the Liffey, near Butt Bridge, Dublin. Gogarty, at great risk, jumped in and held him up till a boat came, and they were picked up.

On the 15th March 1898, Gough plunged into the Grand Canal, Dublin, and saved Mary Morris, but in plunging in a second time he was unable to save her 3 year old child.

On the 8th January 1898, two men accidentally fell into the dock at Penarth. Green jumped in from a height of 16 feet, caught the two men, and took them to a ship's anchor, from which a boat took them up.

Greenwood, A. Private Seaforth Highlanders.   Case 29479

On the 21st April 1898, Privates Lupton and Ainsli, of the same regiment, were bathing in the Nile near Berber, and they were overcome by the current. Greenwood plunged in, and after a severe struggle succeeded in saving both men.

On the 26th December 1897, C.Evans became immersed in the dam at Norton, Derbyshire, through the ice giving way. Griffin and Walsh went in by breaking the ice and at great personal risk succeeded in reaching the lad and rescuing him.

On the 24th October 1897, a young woman was siezed by a fit and fell into the sea at St Lucia, W.I. Guard ran to the spot, and plunging in succeeded, at great personal risk, in effecting the rescue.

Harding, Alfred.    Case 29672

On the 13th August 1898, a girl accidentally fell down a well at Crawley, Sussex. The depth of the well is 35 feet, with 10 feet of water in it. Harding, aged 65, was lowered down and tied a rope round the girl, by which she was pulled out, he himself remaining propped against the sides of the well till the rope was again sent down for him.

On the 3rd September 1897, a Chinese sailor fell overboard from the Revenue Cutter in the Woosung River, Shanghai. Harris at once plunged in fully clothed, and supported the man till both were picked up by a boat.

On the 25th July 1898, Edwin Bailey, while bathing at Porthtowan, Cornwall, was caught by the strong current. Harris and Weeble swam out, and succeeded in bringing him in after about an hour’s work.

Harrison, John.;   Case 29820

On the 16th November 1898, a woman slipped and fell into the Wear at Sunderland. The depth was 28 feet, with a strong current. Harrison, at great risk, plunged in and effected the rescue.

On the 17th November 1898, a woman fell into the Shannon at Limerick. The night was dark, and there was an ebb tide. Hartigan, at great risk, plunged in and succeeded in saving the woman.

Hill, G.L. Corpl. 2nd Battalion Manchester Regiment.   Case 29601

On the 9th March 1898, a native youth was caught by a wave and carried out into deep water at Aden. Lance-Corpl. A.A.Murray and Hill, at great risk, swam out and endeavoured to save him, but failed, and only regained the shore with difficulty.

Hodgson, W.H. Ship’s Apprentice.   Case 29648

On the 28th March 1898, a man accidentally fell overboard from his ship in the harbour at Port Chalmers, New Zealand, the distance from shore 600 yards, and the water infested with sharks. Hodgson jumped after him, and kept him afloat for 25 minutes, when they were picked up by a boat half a mile from the ship.

On the 18th August 1898, Sarah McGlone, aged 60, fell down a deep well at Mullinary, Co. Armagh. Hughes, at great risk, was lowered down the well and rescued her.

Prickett, Geo. Carter.

On the 24th November 1898, A.Hawkes entered the manhole of a sewer at Oxford, and was struck down by foul gas. Hull went in to try and save him, but was also overcome. Dean was lowered into the man hole and rescued Hull. Prickett went down and saved Hawkes. Police constable Baker applied treatment for their restoration.

On the 18th August 1898, Peter Rumbold was bathing in the sea at Walton-on-the-Naze, when he was carried out by the heavy surf. His father tried to save him, but failed. Jewson swam out and, at great risk, rescued the lad.

Jones, Thomas A. Labourer.   Case 29442

On the 11th June 1898, Edith A. Hughes, aged 8, fell down a well 27 feet deep with 7 feet of water at Madeley, Shropshire. Jones, at great risk, went down the well chain, which was old and rusty, and kept the girl above water till a rope was lowered and they were pulled out.

On the 18th April 1898, a lunatic escaped from his keeper and jumped overboard from the SS Duke of Leinster into the Liffey at Dublin. Kay at once jumped in and despite his struggles held him until they were picked up by a boat.

Gul, Zaid.

On the 5th August 1897, three little boys were at play, jumping into shallow water in the Indus at Khushalgarah, India, when they were swept away by the current. Khan and Zaid swam out, and, at great risk, rescued all the boys.

On the 28th September 1898, Rifleman Mehar Khan, 1st Uganda Rifles, was washing his hands at a watering place in the Juba River, British East Africa, when he was seized by a crocodile. His cries attracted attention, and Shamas Khan, at great risk,entered the water, and after firing a rifle induced the animal to release his hold, and Mehar Khan was saved.

On the 8th December 1897, while the steamer Dunottar Castle was on a voyage to South Africa, one of the passengers, in a fit of insanity, jumped overboard Kinnear and Karby dived in and brought him to the surface, when they were picked up.

Langmaid, F.C. A.B.   Case 29280

On the 12th November 1897, F.Wagstaff, O.S., Naval Ordnance, SS Flamer, accidentally fell overboard at sea off Margate. There was strong ebb tide running, and the vessel was steaming at six to seven knots. Langmead at once jumped after him, but was too late to effect the rescue, as Wagstaff sank before being reached.

On the 23rd June 1898, Alfred J.Clawson accidentally fell into Limehouse Cut, and was sinking under a barge. Little, at great risk, plunged in, and succeeded in bringing him to the bank.

On the 8th October 1898, a man fell overboard from the ferryboat at Greenwich. The night was dark, with strong tide. Macdonald, at great risk, sprang in and effected the rescue.

On the 8th September 1898, Richard Bowles was driving a young horse, which became restive and dashed into the Severn at Gloucester. Maddy, who saw the affair, at once sprang in and, at great risk, rescued Bowles.

Maynard, T. Quartermaster Sergt. R.A.   Case 29300

On the 25th August 1897, Aggie Rae, aged 4, accidentally fell from the pier at Bermuda. Maynard, who had only risen from a sick bed, plunged in and rescued her in an unconscious state. Sergt. M.Bennett, 2nd Bn. Leicester Regt. applied the necessary treatment for her restoration.

On the 4th March 1898, a man, while under the influence of drink, fell into the River Liffey at Dublin. McGuirk, who was passing on his car, sprang in and succeeded in bringing him to the bank in an exhausted state.

On the 26th August 1897, Edith Woodward was bathing in the Mazaruni River, British Guiana, when she got into difficulty. McTurk courageously swam out, and with much difficulty succeeded in saving her after she had gone under twice.

McVean, John. Joiner.    Case 29293

On the 22nd December 1897, James M'Que, a labourer, who was engaged in the erection of a new bridge over the Leven at Bonhill, Dumbartonshire, accidentally fell into the river. McVean, who was a quarter of a mile distant, plunged in and rescued him in an exhausted state.

Meakins, C.R.   Case 29692

On the 10th September 1898, Frances A.Drew fell down a well 50 feet deep, with 15 feet of water in it, at Cropthorne, Worcestershire. Meakins, at great risk went down the well-chain, which was in a rotten state, and held the girl up till a rope was got and they were pulled up.

On the 14th May 1898, John Edmonds fell overboard from a trawler in the Tyne at South Shields. Miller jumped in and held him up till a rope was thrown, and they were hauled to the bank.

On the 23rd June 1898, Alexander Brown fell from a gangway into the Tyne Dock, South Shields. Minnikin at once sprang in and held him up till a ladder was got, and they were assisted to land.

Moth, F.C. Second Officer SS Matiana.   Case 29710

On the 26th September 1898, Edward Russell was thrown into the Thames at Gravesend through his barge being run down by the SS Matiana. It was ebb tide at the time. Moth jumped in from a height of 25 feet, and held him up till assistance was given and they were rescued.

Muntz, E.L.C. Lieut. HMS Banshee.   Case 29417

On the 14th May 1898, a seaman accidentally fell overboard from HMS Dragon off the caost of Syra Island. Muntz, at great personal risk, jumped in, and after swimming about 40 yards caught the man and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 10th March 1898, Charles Rint accidentally fell into the water between the steamer and the Admiralty Pier at Dover. Ocket plunged in from the steamer, and having caught the man held him till a rope was got and they were hauled up.

On the 27th November 1898, a woman who had wondered from home got into the Thames at the Adelphi Steps. Outram, at great risk, jumped in, the depth being 20 feet, and rescued her.

On the 28th August 1898, J.W.Fleming was bathing from the rocks at St. Edmond’s Point, Kilkee; the sea being rough with a heavy swell, he was unable to land. Panter-Downes, who was near, plunged in and at great risk succeeded in taking him to the landing.

On the 15th September 1898, F.W.Roper fell into the Dart at Dartmouth, and was carried under the paddle-wheel of the SS Duke of Devonshire, the depth being about 20 feet. Passmore jumped in from the steamer, and at great risk saved Roper.

On the 21st September 1897, W.T.Hodges, petty officer, HMS Magdala, was accidentally knocked overboard from a torpedo boat while at target practice two miles off Bombay Harbour. The boat was steaming about 10 knots, and sharks abound in these waters. Pattison at once jumped in and caught him, and tried to reach the boat, but failed, and had to release his hold, when Hodges sank and was drowned.

On the 16th August 1898, Private Hamer, 2nd Bn. King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, was bathing in a pond 20 feet deep at Trigon Camp, Wareham, when he sank. Privates Bysby and Ashdown, also Charles Sidney and E.Diais, dived in, but could not find him. Perry then dived in, and succeeded in finding him and taking him to the bank, when Private Seel successfully applied restorative treatment.

On the 25th March 1898, Richard Gaffney, gunner, RA, fell into the water between the SS Falcon and the landing stage at Horse Sand Fort, Spithead. At the risk of being crushed, Philpin jumped down and supported him till the vessel drifted clear and they were picked up.

On the 19th October 1898, Alfred Peddle, while repairing a well at Henley-on-Thames, was overcome by carbolic acid gas and became unconscious. Pitcher, at great risk, slid down the rope, got him into the cradle, and he was pulled out.

In December 1906, Dholi N. Kanwa was bathing at Garadu, Taluka, Jhalad, India, and became tangled in weeds. Prema, at great personal risk, rescued him.

On the 2nd August 1898, two youths were accidentally pushed into the Thames at Hammersmith. An unknown man sprang in to try and save them, but also got into difficulties. Proctor then jumped in and succeeded in saving the three, taking them to the bank one at a time.

On the 24th March 1898, the smack Betsey was driven on shore at Corton, near Lowestoft. Communication was opened with the rocket apparatus, but in taking the crew to land two of them were so exhausted that they fell out of the breeches buoy. Instantly Pye, Soanes and Smith sprang into the boiling surf and succeeded in taking them to shore, together with a third man who had been washed off the wreck.

On the 12th September 1898, R.Whitfield, head constable, RIC, Fermoy, was bathing from the point at Kilkee, Co. Clare, and owing to heavy sea was unable to land. Quinlan and Delany, at great risk, plunged in and assisted him to the landing.

On the 29th November 1897, while HMS Fox was at Port Isabella, Fernando Po, he sprang overboard and saved a man who fell from a canoe in shark infested waters.

On the 20th September 1898, a labourer named Magan threw himself into the the Shannon at Shannon Bridge. Katie Reddy entered the water at great risk, and made a vain attempt to rescue him.

On the 22nd January 1898, John Nolan, when going on board the SS Devona, in the harbour at Portland, Maine, USA, accidentally fell between the ship and the quay. At great personal risk, Capt. Rollo jumped in and supported him till a rope was got and they were hauled on board.

On the 19th June 1898, a boat with five men onboard was upset off Ramsey, Isle of Man. Four of the men were picked up, but the fifth had sunk in 20 feet of water. Sayle let down his anchor and went down by the rope and succeeded in finding the man and bringing him to the surface, but too late to restore animation.

On the 19th August 1898, several persons were bathing in the sea at Blakeney, on the Norfolk coast, when one of them was seized with cramp. There was a strong ebb tide and a choppy sea. Scott went to his aid and, at great risk, succeeded in taking him to shore.

On the 25th March 1898, a boy fell into the Ness at Inverness, the river being in flood. Sinnott plunged in and with considerable difficulty effected the rescue.

On the 2nd September 1898, Henry Glover fell from a stage into the Thames at Sheerness, and the ebb tide carried him into deep water. Skinner plunged in and held him up till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 2nd July 1898, a woman and child fell overboard from a yacht one and a half miles off Port Erin, Isle of Man. The yacht was under full sail, and there was a rough sea. Steele, who was on the yacht, at once sprang in, and kept them afloat till they were picked up by a small boat.

On the 25th March 1898, Christopher Brown, in an attempt to give assistance to the crew of the lifeboat, was washed off the quay steps at Bridlington Quay. It was nearly dark and there was a tremendous sea running. Stephenson was lowered down the sea wall and caught Brown, but could not retain his hold. A second time he was lowered down with a like result, and Brown was drowned.

On the 7th September 1897, Lance-Corporal J.Ironside, 2nd Bn Highland Light Infantry, was bathing in a tributary of the Kabul River, Northern India, when he was seized by cramp and sank. Stewart and Smith swam to his aid, and with difficulty rescued him.

On the 13th July 1898, three young ladies were bathing from the beach at Pei-tai-Ho, China, when the undercurrent swept them out into deep water. The Stewarts went to their assistance and, at great risk, succeeded in bringing them to land.

On the 13th October 1898, Ernest Dungay, AB, HMS Redbreast, accidentally fell overboard off Bussorah, in the Persian Gulf. Sulleyman, at great risk, jumped in, but was unable to effect the rescue, and Dungay was drowned.

On the 21st August 1898, a raft on which five men were crossing the Kaddera River, West Africa, broke adrift in mid stream. Two of the men reached the bank, and Sumbur, at great risk, plunged in and rescued the others.

On the 19th September 1898, Stephen Lyons was bathing in the Liffey at Dublin. There was a strong current and he could not regain the bank. Sweeney and Horan swam out and, at great risk, succeeded in landing him, but life was extinct.

On the 12th November 1898, a fishing boat was driven on the rocks in Falcorrib Bay, Co. Donegal. The night was dark with violent storm raging. Sweeney, one of the crew, reached a place of safety, to which he assisted three of his comrades, and from which he plunged into the boiling surf and saved the remaining men, who had failed to reach the rock.

On the 2nd October 1898, William Smith tripped over a rope and fell into the dock at Aberdeen. It was midnight and very dark. Tait, at great risk, jumped in and held him up till a rope was got and he was pulled out.

On the 12th May 1898, Lieut. Headlam, of the West African Frontier Force, went to bathe in the Niger at Jebba, and sank. Taylor, at great risk, dived in and recovered the body, but all attempts to restore animation failed.

Tinning, John W. Coxwain North Blyth Lifeboat.   Case 29779

On the 16th October 1898, the lifeboat was capsized about half a mile from shore in a heavy sea. When she righted one of the crew named Fairhurst failed to reach her. Tinning at once jumped in, and having caught Fairhurst swam with him to shore, but he was dead when landed.

On the 1st September 1898, G.A.Hurst was engaged in cleaning the sewer at Dunkinfield, when he got fast in a 15-inch pipe, about 50 yards from the manhole. Travis , at great risk, crawled up the pipe, and eventually effected his rescue.

On the 22nd September 1898, Thos. Maney accidentally fell into the oil tank of the SS Mexicano in the Tampico River, Mexico. There was a depth of 14 feet of crude petroleum in the tank, giving off a dangerous gas which rendered him unconscious. Trusson, at great risk, entered the tank and effected the rescue.

On the 16th November 1897, Gunner Riley, 35th Company R.A., jumped overboard from a steam launch while on the way from Hong Kong to Stonecutters' Island. Vaughan and Barnett sprang in and supported him till they were picked up.

On the 1st October 1898, a boy fell into the harbour at Lieth, the depth being 12 feet. Watson, at great risk, plunged in, and after diving brought him to the surface, and they were then pulled on to the quay with a rope.

On the 4th February 1898, an ordinary seaman of HMS Magnificent was accidentally knocked overboard from the ship's cutter in Portland Roads. There was a heavy sea and the weather very cold. Webb at once sprang in and supported the man for some time, when both were picked up by a boat.

On the 21st July 1898, Robert McGee was bathing in the sea at Port Ballantae, Co.Antrim, when the current carried him out. McGee swam out and, at great risk, supported him in the water till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 15th July 1898, E.J.de Kritschmar, of Richmond, was bathing at Whitby when he became exhausted and was carried out into deep water. Welham swam out and kept him afloat for some time till a boat came and picked them up, but Kritschmar was dead when landed.

On the 17th September 1898, a boy accidentally fell into the Regent’s Canal, Limehouse. West jumped in fully clothed and rescued him.

Williams, W.J. Commissioned Boatman HM Coastguard.   Case 29339

On the 22nd February 1898, the coastguard boat was capsized off Wells Point, Norfolk. Four of the five men were drowned, the fifth, named Devlin, held on to the boat, which drifted inshore. Williams gallantly swam out and succeeded in bringing him to shore in an unconscious state, where he died two hours after.

On the 21st September 1898, Joseph Baker, aged 7, was on a floating plank in Williamson’s Pond, Tottenham, when he fell in and sank. The pond is very dangerous, with about 8 feet of water and 3 feet of mud. Wilson, at great risk, dived in and recovered the body, but life was extinct.
