Adams, Wm. Bronze Clasp Case 30217

On the 30th July 1899, a lady and a gentleman were in a boat which they allowed to drift into the breakers at Gorleston. Adams, at great risk, swam out, and having got into the boat rowed them to a place of safety.

Ahern, Denis. Labourer. Case 30116

On the 15th June 1899, John Hayes was bathing in the Shannon at Castle Connell and went under water. He was 15 yards from the bank, the depth 20 feet, and a strong current running. Ahern and Wm. Lee, school teacher, at great risk, went to his help and succeeded in landing him.

Alexander, R. Private Scots Greys. Case 29965

On the 21st April, an old man named Peter Kelly was knocked overboard from his barge while passing under Boghouse Bridge on the Forth and Clyde Canal. Alexander, at great risk, plunged in, the water being 16 feet deep, but was unable to effect the rescue, and Kelly was drowned.

Allison, William. Seaman SS Olive. Case 30451

On the 26th October 1899, Margaret M. Hamilton fell into the Liffey at Dublin, between the SS Olive and the quay. At great risk, Allison jumped from the steamer and supported her till ropes were got and they were drawn up.

Annison, Ernest. Aged 13. Case 30072

On the 18th June 1899, a boy fell from a raft into the River Yare at Yarmouth. The depth was 10 feet, with a strong tide running. Annison, at great risk, jumped in and rescued the lad.

Arthur, W.C. Police Inspector. Case 30389

On the 22nd May 1899, a woman was carried out to sea by a stream which was in flood owing to heavy rain at Jamestown, St.Helena. Arthur, at great risk, sprang in from the wharf and caught the woman, when both were swept on to the rocks by a huge wave, and Arthur then gained a position of safety with the woman.

Bagnall, John. Training Ship Wellesley. Case 29870

On the 18th January 1899, J.G.Cummings fell into the Tyne at North Shields. There was an ebb tide and the depth 30 feet. Bagnall, at great risk, jumped in, and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

Barham, Arthur. Schoolboy. Case 29930

On the 12th February 1899, a lad accidentally fell into the sea from the rocks under the Hoe at Plymouth, and was quickly carried out into deep water. Barham, at great risk, plunged in and effected the rescue.

Barry, James. Case 29861

On the 14th November 1898, Private G.Murray RAMC, fell into the Thames at Woolwich. The water was deep and the night cold and foggy. Barry, at great risk, sprang in, and was successful in effecting the rescue.

Barry, John. Land Agent Limerick. Case 30390

On the 28th August 1899, E.F.Guerin, solicitor, Limerick, was bathing from the dangerous rocks at Kilkee, Co. Clare, when he took cramp about 150 yards from shore. Barry, at great risk, swam out, and after a hard struggle succeeded in landing him, but life was extinct.

On the 11th June 1899, Charles Moore fell from a boat into the river at Shanghai, there being at the time a 5-knot current running. Barton jumped in and, at great risk, supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

Bates, Thomas. Aged 13. Case 30323

On the 12th August 1899, James Dyer, while fishing, fell into an arm of the trent at Burton. The place was very dangerous, being 14 feet deep and full of weeds. Bates, at great risk, jumped in fully clothed and succeeded in saving him.

Clementson, M.

On the 20th June 1899, a fishing boat with six men on board was capsized in trying to cross the bar at Knysna, South Africa. There was a heavy sea running and the depth 20 feet. Clementson took hold of one of his comrades, and with the help of an oar supported him among the breakers till they were picked up. A rescue boat in charge of Benn, an old pilot, his crew being C.Clementson, C.Leach, G.Solomons and C.Povie, then put off from the beach, and, at great risk, succeeded in rescuing all the men.

On the 13th April 1899, John Dobbin fell from the Custom House Quay into the dock at Port Talbot, there being 27 feet of water at the time. Berigot jumped in and held him till further help came and they were pulled out.

Bond, F. Stoker. Case 30384

On the 2nd October 1899, a man named McGillivary fell overboard from the steam launch Victoria in the harbour at Portsmouth. The night was dark with a choppy sea. Bond, at great risk, plunged in from the launch, and put him into a lifebuoy, by which he was hauled on board.

Bowen, John. Case 30245

On the 29th July 1899, two boys named Moffett and Scott fell into the River Lagan at Belfast. The river here is 250 yards wide and 20 feet deep. Bowen, at great risk, jumped in from the opposite bank, swam across and took Moffett to land, where he died. Bowen again plunged in and supported Scott till they were picked up by a boat.

Busher, Laurence. Tug Master. Case 30037

On the 15th June 1899, an old pilot named Neill was in his boat in tow of a tug off the bar at Wexford, when the boat was capsized. Busher, master of the tug, at great risk, sprang in and held him up till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 18th October 1898, a vessel was driven on the rocks at Gourdon, Kincardineshire, and went to pieces at once. The night was dark with a tremendous sea running. Cargill and Gowans, at great risk, swam out and succeeded in saving two men, the remainder of the crew being drowned.

On the 24th June 1899, Ernest Street, while at play, fell into the river at Newhaven, Sussex, the depth being 15 to 20 feet, with a strong tide running. Chant, at great risk, plunged in and succeeded in saving him.

Chantler, C.S. Lighterman. Case 29941

On the 22nd April 1899, A.F.Hughes accidentally fell into the Thames at Bankside, Southwark. There was an ebb tide and the depth 12 feet. Chantler plunged in and rescued him.

Clancy, James. Case 30222

On the 11th August 1899, E.Moriarty was bathing in the Shannon at Tarbert, when he got into 15 feet of water 30 yards from the bank. Clancy, at great risk, jumped in from a boat and succeeded in saving him.

Clark, Cicero S. Apprentice Chemist. Case 30012

On the 4th June 1899, two men were bathing in the river Ribble at Long Preston, when they both got into a deep hole 20 feet from the bank. Clark went in and saved one of the men, but was unable to save the other, who was drowned.

Clarke, Richard. Boot Manufacturer. Case 30038

On the 29th May 1899, Kate Ahern, in trying to board the ship County of Pembroke, in the harbour of Queenstown, missed her footing and fell in. Clarke jumped in from the ship, and at great risk kept her afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

Coleman, Patrick. Seaman. Case 29914

On the 18th January 1899, on arrival of the Mail Steamer Connaught at Holyhead, Miss K.Burke, one of the passengers, accidentally fell into the water between the vessel and the quay. At the risk of being crushed by the swaying steamer, Coleman sprang in, and was successful in saving Miss Burke.

Compagno, Geo. Sergt.-Trumpeter Royal Malta Artillery. Case 30338

On the 25th June 1899, a boy and a girl got into deep water at Calcara, Malta, and were in a position of great danger. Compagno, at great risk, went out and succeeded in saving both.

Connor, John. Commissioned Boatman HM Coastguard. Case 30208

On the 13th August 1899, Alice Ely and Charles Spencer in trying to board HMS Onyx in Bridlington Bay fell from their boat into the sea. Connor sprang in from the ship, and at great risk succeeded in saving both.

Corcoran, M. Constable RIC. Case 29855

On the 3rd December 1898, a woman and two children were thrown into the canal at Tullamore owing to cart being upset. The night was dark and the depth 8 to 10 feet. Corcoran, at great risk, plunged in and saved both children; again going in he rescued the woman.

Cox, Launcelot. Lieut. Case 29862

On the 18th September 1898, a stoker of HMS Jackdaw fell into the Niger at Akassa, West Africa. The night was dark and the river infested with sharks. Cox, at great risk, jumped in, and gallantly attempted to effect the rescue, but failed.

On the 9th November 1898, five men of the 1st Bn. Suffolk Regt. were outside the harbour at Malta in a small boat, when she sprang a leak and capsized 300 yards from shore in deep water. Two of the men, Crick and Goodwin, at great personal risk, saved two of their comrades, the fifth man being drowned.

On the 13th August 1899, Mary Clery fell into the river Liffey at Poulaphuca, Co. Wickloe. There was a strong current and the depth 20 feet. Daly, at great risk, went in, and diving, brought her to the surface, when Constable Finnegan, RIC, who had also gone in, assisted in taking her to the bank.

Hogg, R. Private 1st Bn. Coldstream Guards.

On the 2nd July 1899, Private A.Bygate, of the same battalion, was bathing in the sea at Gibraltar, when he became exhausted 300 yards from shore. Danks and Hogg, at great risk, swam out and succeeded in saving him.

Davidson, James. Joiner. Case 29954

On the 2nd December 1898, an old woman named Betty Goldie was in danger of drowning at Cumnock, Ayrshire, through her house being filled to a depth of 5 feet by a heavy flood. Davidson, at great risk, reached her cottage and succeeded in saving her.

Davies, Wm. Case 29845

On the 26th November 1898, a fall of rock took place in the Cefn Quarry, Cilgerran, Pembrokeshire, crushing a man so that he could not move, the water meanwhile rising rapidly. Davies, at great risk, went down, propped up the stone, and held the man’s head above water till further help was given and he was rescued.

On the 11th August 1898, a woman named Ma Sein was swept out into deep water while bathing in the Irrawaddy River, Upper Burma. Deefholts, at great risk, swam out and effected her rescue.

Demment, M.W. Civil Servant. Case 30207

On the 10th August 1899, E.G.Armstrong threw himself into the Thames from Chelsea Bridge, striking a buttress in his fall. Demment, at great risk, jumped in from the bridge and endeavoured to save him, but with out success.

Dickinson, John. Labourer. Case 30314

On the 14th June 1899, Wm. Saul, while in a state of intoxication, jumped into the Tyne at Newcastle. There was a strong flood tide and the depth 15 feet. Dickinson, at great risk, jumped in and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

Drane, Robert. Fisherman. Bronze Clasp Case 30144

On the 10th July 1899, C.Thompson, a miner, fell from the quay into the Tyne at Newcastle, the depth at the time being 15 feet. Drane jumped in and, at great risk, succeeded in saving him. This rescue brings Drane’s record up to 50 lives saved.

Drew, G. Barry. Captain 1st Bn. West Yorkshire Regiment. Case 30059

On the 24th June 1899, two men accidentally fell from a small boat into the Ouse at York. They were 20 yards from the bank, in 15 feet of water. Drew at once sprang in and saved one man, afterwards making a gallant but unsuccessful attempt to save the second man, who was drowned.

On the 30th June 1899, a native soldier and boy fell into the Nile from the gunboat Sultan some 12 miles south of Omdurman. There was a strong stream, the depth 20 feet, and infested with crocodiles. Drury, Mahomed and Salam plunged in, and were successful in saving both.

On the 30th May 1899, W.Habgood went down a pump well to do some repairs at the Waterworks, Guernsey, when he was struck down by foul air at a depth of 40 feet. Duffey went down at great risk, but could not effect the rescue. Priaulx then went down with a rope and rescued Habgood.

Edginton, W.F. Private 2nd Bn. Wiltshire Regt. Case 30282

On the 5th August 1899, Wm. Robin, who cannot swim, was on the rocks in Cobo Bay, Guernsey, when he was surrounded by the incoming tide. Edginton swam out a distance of 50 yards, and at great risk was successful in bringing him in.

Elliott, Frank. Sapper 1st West Yorkshire RE (Vol.). Case 30325

On the 6th August 1899, a boy fell into a deep and very dangerous pond at Blackpool. Elliott, at great risk, sprang in and with much difficulty managed to save the lad.

Fell, Herbert L.H. Lieut. RN. Case 30452

On the 27th May 1899, a native boy fell overboard from the gunboat Nasr at Jebel Ahmed Aga in the Sudan. The Nile is here 25 feet deep with a strong current, and full of crocodiles and hippopotami. Fell jumped in from a height of 15 feet, caught the boy, and ropes being thrown they were hauled up.

On the 21st July 1899, a boy while bathing in the Wensum at Norwich got into deep water, there being a strong tide, and the river walled in. Fish, at great risk, jumped in and succeeded in effecting the rescue.

On the 19th June 1899, a man, in an attempt to escape from the police, jumped overboard from the ferry-boat between Greenore and Greencastle. Fisher, who was on the boat, at once plunged in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 2nd May 1899, W.Marsh fell overboard from SS Myleta in the Medway at Queenborough. The night was dark with a strong ebb tide. Ford jumped in and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 22nd May 1899, Joseph Pickles was swept of the pier at Seaham Harbour by a huge wave, there being a very rough sea on. Futter swam out, but was unable to bring him in, and he was drowned.

On the 23rd November 1898, the Schooner Flirt was wrecked at Burton Bradstock, Devon. Three of the crew were drowned, and Gear, at great risk, dashed into the surf and succeeded in saving the remaining man as he was thrown up by the waves.

Graves, Frank A. 2nd Officer SS Rippingham Grange. Case 29838

On the 20th November 1898, a man accidentally fell into the La Plata Dock, Buenos Ayres, in a very dangerous place. Graves at once jumped in from a height of 20 feet and placed a rope round him, by which he was rescued.

Green, Richard. A.B. SS Olive. Case 29843

On the 24th November 1898, the SS FitzJames was lost off Hastings, and one of her seamen was seen clinging to a boat in the fierce gale. Green jumped overboard with a line, and, at great risk, effected the rescue.

Gregory, Thomas. Aged 10. Case 30171
O’Donovan, D.

On the 3rd August 1899, a youth named Goodland got into difficulties while bathing in the Taff at Cardiff, the depth being about 15 feet. Gregory went to his help, but was clutched by Goodland. O’Donovan now went in and, parting them, rescued Goodland, while Gregory reached the bank unaided.

On the 28th May 1899, a boy fell into the harbour at Exeter in a very dangerous place between a ship and the quay, the depth of water being 10 feet. Gregory, at great risk, jumped down and rescued him.

Greig, Constable Lanarkshire Constabulary. Case 29934

On the 30th January 1899, a minor named Tait was crossing Hogganfield Loch on the ice, when a breakage took place and he fell in. John McGowan went to his help, but also fell in. The loch is very deep and dangerous. Constables Greig and Macdonald went out on the thin ice and succeeded in saving both men.

On the 22nd August 1899, Henry R. Hole was bathing in the river Yeo at Wick St. Lawrence, Somerset, when he got into 15 feet of water 20 yards from the bank. At great risk Gray swam out and brought him to the bank in an exhausted state.

On the 14th September 1899, a seaman fell overboard from the SS Avoca in the English Channel, the ship at the time going 13½ knots. Grier, at great risk, jumped after him, and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 17th June 1899, a child while at play fell into the Thames at Westminster. At great risk, Grunsell jumped in, swam with him under the bridge, and landed him.

On the 12th August 1899, J.Hoskin, fisherman, was in a boat which capsized 50 yards from the beach in 30 feet of water at Coverack, Cornwall. Guy, at great risk, swam out and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

Dumreicher, A. von. Major.

On the 15th August 1899, a youth named Nimmo, while bathing in Stanley Bay, Ramleh, Egypt, was swept out by the strong seaward current. Haseldon and Dumreicher, at great risk, swam out to his help, and succeeded in bringing him nearer the shore, when all three were caught by the huge breakers and thrown on the beach in an unconscious state.

Hassan, Constable. Case 29985

On the 7th April 1899, a Chinese prisoner made a daring attempt to escape from the police at Singapore, and in the end jumped into the river. Hassan went after him, but, as the man had sunk, was unable to effect the rescue.

Healand, Annie. Domestic Servant. Case 29894

On the 28th January 1899, three children became immersed through the ice giving way on a pond at Sledmere Castle, Yorkshire. Healand plunged in, and, at great personal risk, saved one child, the other two being unfortunately drowned.

Heffer, Wm. H. Schoolboy aged 12. Case 30458

On the 19th November 1899, a woman, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into the New River at Islington. Heffer, at great risk, plunged in and brought her to the bank.

Hirst, S. Private 1st Bn. Leinster Regt. Case 30277

On the 25th August 1899, a boy fell into the harbour at Halifax, N.S., there being a current running, and the depth 20 to 25 feet. Hirst ran nearly half a mile, and jumping in dived, caught the lad, and brought him out apparently dead. He then applied artificial respiration, and was successful in restoring the lad after working about an hour.

Hoggett, Frederick. Case 29888

On the 4th February 1899, Henry Jones, A.B. HMS Desperate accidentally fell into the Thames off Greenhithe, and was carried away by the current. Although the night was very dark, Hoggett at once sprang in from the ship and supported Jones till both were picked up by a boat.

Hughes, Benjamin. Seaman. Case 30139

On the 11th July 1899, a man named Jones jumped overboard from the SS Duchess of Devonshire, when at sea, near Berry Head. Hughes at once went after him, but he kicked and struggled so violently that Hughes had to release his hold, and was in a very exhausted state when picked up.

Huntingford, W. Seaman SS London Belle. Case 30189

On the 8th August 1899, a woman fell from the pier at Clacton, the depth being 12 feet, with a strong ebb tide, there being also danger of being carried under SS London Belle. Huntingford, on board the vessel, at once sprang in, and with considerable difficulty and risk succeeded in saving the woman.

On the 14th November 1899, a youth fell from the paddle-wheel of the SS Normandy at Newhaven. There was a strong ebb tide and the depth 20 feet. At great risk, Ince jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

James, Harvey. Clerk. Case 30058

On the 20th June 1899, five persons were in a small boat on the Orwell at Ipswich, when the boat capsized, throwing all into the water. James, at great risk, plunged in and was successful in saving three persons.

Jenkins, Samuel. Aged 15. Case 29939

On the 13th April 1899, a boy named Kelly was fishing in the Bann at Banbridge, Co. Down, and accidentally fell in. D.Monaghan tried to rescue him, but failed. Jenkins then plunged in, and in spite of the flooded state of the river saved the lad.

Jones, L.T. Private 2nd Bn. Grenadier Guards. Case 30080

On the 18th June 1899, two men of the Coldsteam Guards were bathing in Camp Bay, Gibraltar, and were carried out by the strong undercurrent. Jones swam out, and at great risk saved both men.

On the 15th March 1899, a woman in an attempt at suicide threw herself down a well at Viramgam, India, the depth being 30 feet, with 17 feet of water. Jusaji, at great risk, went down and kept her above water for half an hour, when they were pulled up.

On the 29th November 1899, a woman fell from a boat into the river at Lisnaskea, Co. Fermanagh. There was a strong stream and the depth 7 feet. Ledger, who was driving past, left his trap, and plunged in and rescued the woman.

On the 21st March 1899, Corporal Sheehy, 2nd Bn. the Leinster Regt., was bathing in the sea at Belle Plaine, Barbadoes, and could not regain the shore. Three other men of the battalion went to his help, but also got into difficulty. Lennon, Brown, Dunne and Halpin swam out and saved the three men, but Sheehy was drowned.

On the 8th June 1899, David Hall fell from a boat into the river at Purfleet, there being a strong tide running at the time. Lewis jumped in from the gangway, and, at great risk, kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

Logan, G.A. Signalman HMS Galatea. Case 30434

On the 25th October 1899, a woman accidentally fell into the Alexandria Dock at Hull, the depth of water being 25 feet. Logan at once jumped in, and at great risk took her to small platform near the dock wall, when assistance was given and they were rescued.

M’Clean, W.H. Sergt. R.I.C. Case 30085

On the 5th July 1899, John Wallace fell into the Lee at Cork. There was a strong ebb tide, and no means of landing, the quay wall being 15 feet high. M’Clean sprang in fully clothed, and supported him in the water till they were picked up by a boat.

Mackinlay, Daniel. Case 29901

On the 3rd February 1899, Nellie Peat, while crossing the canal at Ratho, near Edinburgh, fell through the ice where the depth was seven and a half feet. Mackinlay, at great risk, went to her help, when he also fell in, but keeping his hold on the girl he, with much difficulty, reached the bank.

Mann, Algernon E. Aged 12. Case 30291

On the 22nd August 1899, John Lewis, who cannot swim, was bathing in the sea at Goodwick, Pembroke, when he was carried out into deep water. At great risk, man swam out and succeeded in saving him.

Marsh, A.J. Assistant Steward HMS Hearty. Case 29882

On the 26th September 1898, five persons were thrown into the sea half a mile from shore, off Shoreham, by the capsizing of a boat. One of the party saved himself, and Marsh supported his three young brothers in the water till they picked up by a boat.

Marsh, William H. Lock-Keeper. Case 30140

On the 16th July 1899, a skiff with a girl on board was capsized on the lock at Chertsey. The lock is about 8 feet deep and 30 feet wide. Marsh jumped in and landed her on the opposite bank, she being unconscious.

On the 21st March 1899, a woman had thrown herself into the Thames near the Adelphi Steps. The night was dark and the depth between 15 and 20 feet. Martin plunged in and, at great risk, rescued her.

Matthews, John. Aged 10. Case 30334

On the 9th September 1899, Minnie Gibbs accidentally fell into the harbour at Poole, Dorset. The depth was 15 feet, with a strong tide running. Matthews, at great risk, jumped in and swam with her to the landing.

On the 19th August 1899, W.Norman became exhausted while swimming in Tramore Bay, Co. Waterford, and sank in 12 feet of water. McCann, at great risk, dived, and having recovered the body took it to shore, but life was extinct.

McCarthy, F. Merchant. Case 29932

On the 13th February 1899, a man and two women were thrown from a trap into a flooded dyke 10 to 12 feet deep at Mohano, Co. Cork. McCarthy, at great personal risk, jumped in and succeeded in saving the three.

McCaulay, James. Gunner 11th Co. S.D.R.A. Case 30026

On the 1st April 1899, Private W.Morgan, 1st Bn. South Wales Borderers, became exhausted, and sank in the Ganges canal, Roorkee, India. McCaulay, at great personal risk, gallantly attempted to rescue him, but on account of the strong current was unable to do so.

McDonald, J. Puddler. Case 30381

On the 26th September 1899, a boy fell into the River Calder at Motherwell, and was swept away. Robert Shields went into his assistance, but was also carried away. McDonald sprang in and, at great risk, brought Shields to the bank but he was dead. The boy was also drowned.

McKenna, Daniel E. Schoolboy. Case30077

On the 12th June 1899, John J.Lynch was bathing in the Suir at Waterford, and sank in 14 feet of water 15 yards from the bank. At great risk McKenna swam out and attempted to save him, but failed, and Lynch was drowned.

McNidder, David. Apprentice. Case 29983

On the 11th February 1898, the sailing ship Dudhope of Dundee was in lat. 0´-10N. , long. 116º W. , when a seaman named Dwyer fell overboard. McNidder jumped after him, and supported him for some time, when he was joined by a seaman named Lawson, shortly after which they were picked up by a boat.

Mendez, Emilio. Boatswain. Case 29872

On the 9th January 1899, four men were struck down by foul gas in the hold of the SS Noviembre at Salford. Mendez, with W.Harris and R.Ashcroft, went down and saved three men, but the fourth succumbed.

On the 31st December 1898, Ellen Moffat accidentally fell into the Thames at East Greenwich. The night was cold and the depth 12 feet. At great personal risk, Miller jumped in and kept her afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 1st November 1899, a child fell down a well 50 feet deep with 14 feet of water at the bottom, at Road (sic), near Bath. At great risk, Morris went down by a ladder and the well-pipe, and succeeded in saving the child.

On the 9th June 1899, Peter Rorke got into 20 feet of water while bathing in the Shannon at Athlone. Norton, at great risk, swam across the river, which is 300 yards wide, and diving took Rorke to the bank; but life was extinct.

On the 25th June 1899, Acting Bombardier A.Haynes, RHA, was bathing in the Phalki nullah, Sialkot, India, when he was carried away by the rush of water, the nullah being swollen from heavy rain. O’Brien jumped in to his help, but owing to the strong current could not effect the rescue.

On the 28th July 1899, J.A.Quigley was bathing in a dangerous part of the river at Connamona, Co. Galway, when he got into deep water. O’Connell and Ruane, at great risk, went out and succeeded in saving him.

Jones, S.C. Schoolboy. Case 30172

On the 16th July 1899, H.Ashford fell into the Avon at Downton, near Salisbury, the depth being 7 feet, and dangerous owing to weeds. Jones, at great risk, jumped in, and after diving caught Ashford and landed him.

On the 1st October 1899, a Hindu boy fell into the Hooghli at Calcutta, the depth being 30 feet with a strong current. Freemantle sprang in and succeeded in landing him.

On the 27th November 1898, a man ventured into the Umgeni River, Natal, and was in danger of being carried over the Albert Falls. Otto plunged in, and, with much difficulty and danger, rescued him.

On the 1st June 1899, a youth fell into the Wye at Hereford, and was carried 600 yards down stream, into 15 feet of water 30 yards from the bank. Palmer, at great risk, plunged in, caught the lad, and rescued him.

On the 23rd August 1899, Wm. Ham accidentally fell into the Avon at Bristol. Paul saw the accident from a passing steamer, and at once jumping overboard swam to and, at great risk, took the youth to land.

On the 8th August 1899, two lads, while at play, fell from the North-east Pier at Sunderland, the depth of water being 16 to 18 feet. Paxton, at great risk, jumped in and supported both lads till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 18th August 1899, a lady and a gentleman were surrounded by the tide while on the rocks at Ilfracombe. Phelan, at great risk, swam out and succeeded in bringing both to land.

On the 11th May 1899, a boy named Mulligan fell down the shaft at an old pit at Walkden. There was great danger of choke-damp being present. At great risk, Potter was lowered down by a rope, and succeeded in saving the lad.

On the 11th May 1899, a trimmer, when mad with drink, jumped overboard from the SS Sokoto, when off Cape Coast Castle. These waters are much infested with sharks. Price, Horn, Mellis and Langley all jumped in and, with their united efforts, managed to rescue the man.

On the 22nd August 1899, W.H.Chard slipped and fell from his yacht into the harbour at Poole, Dorset, and at once called for help. Redmond plunged in and, at great risk, succeeded in saving him, thereafter applying treatment for his restoration.

Renforth, Stephen. Bronze Clasp Case 30122

On the 13th June 1899, a child fell into the Tyne at Newcastle, the depth at the time being 12 feet. Renforth, who was in bad health at the time, plunged in from the quay and, at great risk, supported it till a boat came. When the boat came it was pulled right over Renforth, cutting his head open, and he was taken from the water in an exhausted state.

On the 24th June 1899, a drummer belonging to the same battalion, had gone out a distance of 800 yards at Guernsey, and was unable to return owing to the strong tide then running. Rickwood and Ashfield swam out, and although they caught the lad they were unable to bring him in and he was drowned. The two men were much exhausted when picked up by a boat.

Rowatt, W. Boatman. Case 30328

On the 16th August 1899, Rowatt was laying down moorings for a yacht in the Sound of Mull, off Aros, and had along with him two lads. When some 200 yards from shore the boat capsized. Rowatt got the lads on the keel of the boat, when she righted and they were again in the water. He then, at great risk, got them into the waterlogged boat, when help was given by another boat, and they were pucked up.

On the 27th October 1899, J.T.Errington accidentally fell into the Tyne at Benwell. The depth was 12 feet and a strong tide running. Sadler, at great risk, sprang in fully clothed, and after diving effected the rescue.

On the 24th August 1899, Dr. Martin, of Gilford, Co. Down, was bathing at Port Skillion, Isle of Man, and became exhausted in the rough sea. Saunders, at great risk, swam out and supported him till a lifebuoy was got, and they were drawn to the beach.

On the 1st August 1899, Wilfred Moore and T.Johnson were bathing in the Nidd at Bilton, near Harrowgate, when they got into a deep and dangerous hole. Scott, at great risk, swam out, and with difficulty succeeded in saving both.

On the 9th July 1899, F.Gardner was bathing in the sea at Southwick when he got into deep water, and sank 100 yards from shore. Scott, from Hove, swam to the place, and after diving succeeded in bringing him to the shore.

On the 22nd July 1899, as the SS Ballycotton was leaving the wharf at Waterford, W.Walsh, labourer, fell from the ship into 19 feet of water. Shearer at once sprang after him and, at great risk, kept him afloat till further help was given and they were assisted to land.

On the 28th June 1898, two women were bathing in the Puntaza River, Burma, when they got into a dangerous current, and were carried out into deep water. Singh, at great risk, swam out and succeeded in saving both.

Skyrme, W.H. Post Office Clerk. Case 30385

On the 14th August 1899, R.H.Kaye and W.C.Lewis were bathing at Little Haven, Pembrokeshire, when Kaye became exhausted. Lewis tried to save him, but failed. Skyrme, at great risk, then swam out, and supported him till a boat came up, into which he was taken.

On the 21st November 1898, a schooner was driven on shore at Banff, and one of the seamen, in trying to gain the land, became exhausted about 100 yards from the beach. Slater, at great risk, was lowered from the pier, swam out and saved him.

On the 3rd July 1899, a lad jumped from a boat in Mellieha Bay, Malta, the distance from shore being 150 yards and deep water. Smith and Buttigieg, at great risk, swam out, and succeeded in bringing him to land in an unconscious state.

On the 26th February 1899, a seaman, of HMS Fearless, accidentally fell over board at Kandia, Crete. The man was drifting away, the sea being rough, when Smith, at great risk, plunged in and held him up till a boat took them on board.

On the 18th October 1898, Henry Cook fell from the wharf into the Thames at Limehouse. There was a strong current, and the night dark. Smith, at great personal risk, jumped in and effected the rescue.

On the 20th August 1899, a number of bandsmen belonging to the 2nd Vol. Yorkshire Regt. were bathing in the sea at Scarborough when Frank Allen, who could not swim, was carried out by the strong ebb tide. Harry Bradley and Thos. Little went out to try and save him, but failed, and Bradley could not regain the shore. At great risk Smith then swam out, and succeeded in rescuing Bradley, but Allen was drowned.

On the 26th April 1899, a lad named Martin fell into the sea at Hove, and was carried out about 60 yards by the current. Steel swam out and, at great risk, brought the lad to shore, swimming with him in his teeth.

Stracey, Eustace. Lieut. RN Inspector of Lifeboats. Case 30432

On the 3rd November 1899, three men went out in a small boat at Newburgh, Aberdeen, to make fast a line with the purpose of launching the lifeboat, when their boat capsized. Two of the men could swim and reached the shore, but the third man, John Innes, was in danger. Stracey, at great risk, swam out and rescued him.

Summerbell, Richard. Colliery Overman. Case 29883

On the 9th December 1898, a miner was struck down by the black damp in a disused part of Burnhope Colliery, Lanchester, Durham. No one present dared to attempt the rescue, but Summerbell who was a mile and a half distant, was sent for. On reaching the place he at once rushed into the infected part of the mine, and, at great risk, effected the rescue.

On the 25th June 1899, a boy, while bathing in the sea at Trinidad, W.I., was carried away by the strong current. Jose M. Farfan, clerk, swam out, but failed to bring him in and also got into great difficulties. Taitt then went out and, at great risk, was successful in saving both.

On the 7th August 1899, a boy fell into the Thames at Temple Steps, and was being rapidly carried away by the strong tide. Taylor, at great risk, jumped in fully clothed, and succeeded in rescuing the boy.

On the 22nd April 1899, Norman Moncreiff fell into the sea from the rocks at North Berwick, and was swept out 40 yards from the shore into 15 feet of water. T.B.Laird tried to save him, but failed. Thomson dived in from a boat and, at great risk, succeeded in saving him.

On the 6th September 1898, a woman, while bathing in the Ganges, at Allahabad, was swept out by the current into 30 feet of water. Tiwari, at great risk, swam out and rescued her.

On the 17th May 1899, Gunner T.Jackson, of the same company, was bathing in the sea at Malta, and sank 40 yards from shore in 12 feet of water. Todd, at great risk, swam out and succeeded in saving him.

On the 23rd July 1899, T.Cowan and W.Luxton were carried away by the current while bathing at Newbiggin, Northumberland. James Cowan swam out and tried to save T.Cowan, but failed. Turnball, at great risk, then went out and rescued both men.

Watts, J. Petty Officer 1st Class HMS Ganges. Case 29933

On the 7th April 1899, the ferryboat, while crossing from Falmouth to Flushing, sank. There was a strong gale and a high sea running. Watts kept a boy and a girl afloat for some time, but had to release his hold of the boy, who was drowned, but he succeeded in saving the girl.

Webb, Lucia. Miss. Case 30307

On the 26th August 1899, Peter Kenny, aged 8, fell into the sea at Bray, Co. Wicklow. The sea was rough, and the depth 8 to 9 feet. Webb jumped in to try and save him, but failed, and herself got into danger. Frank Nolan, seaman, jumped in and rescued Miss Webb in an unconscious state. James Nash applied artificial respiration, and succeeded in restoring her in about 45 minutes. The boy was drowned.

On the 4th June 1899, a boy accidentally fell into the canal at Pirbright. Wellings jumped in and caught him, when they were lifted out.

On the 8th August 1899, Mr. Eastoe fell into the harbour at Yarmouth. The night was dark, the depth 18 feet, and a strong tide running. Wheeler sprang in from his vessel and, at great risk, rescued the man.

On the 17th August 1899, a boy fell into the sea from the slope under Southsea Castle, and was quickly carried out a distance of 25 yards from the beach. Wheeler, at great risk, plunged in and was successful in landing him.

On the 28th July 1899, a boy named Burstow fell into the Thames at Greenwich, the depth at the time being 25 feet. John T.Cross went in to try and save him, but also got into danger. Whybourn, at great risk, jumped in and rescued both.

On the 11th December 1898, a stoker on HMS Bonaventure fell overboard from a boat in the Pasig River at Manila. Willis plunged in and caught the man, but was dragged under water, and had to release his hold, the man being drowned.

Wood, Charles W. A.B. Case 30397

On the 19th September 1899, a man fell from a boat in which he was returning to HMS Collingwood, in Lough Swilly. Wood at once jumped after him, and after a swim of 40 yards kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.
