. So what is a MUD? Well MUD stands for Multi-User Dimensions, though some people affectionately say it also stands for Mult-User Dungeons and Dragons. Essentially a mud is a HUGE program which runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, into which any number of people can log in at the same time, and interact with each other, and/or the game, in real time. You can choose how to play it; you can take it as just good fun, and a good way to socialize (I myself met my girl friend on a mud), or you can take it deadly seriously, and compete with the other people from all over the world, to be the best there is, or you can, like most play as a balance of the two. .. One more thing you should know; the vast majority of people on MUDs, 95% +, are the players, as everyone is when they start, but for those of you who do really well, and fancy actually help make the MUD then you can become a Wizard - Wizards are the computer programmers that make everything, fix bugs, and help people with problems out. So if you meet a wizard, be nice, he can do things for you that no player can. .. Dragon's Path (DP) is a new kind of MUD, with amazing detail; basically if you can think of it, you can do it on Dragon's Path. There as literally thousands of skills, from sword skill to swimming, from conjuring to poetry, it is the closest thing there is to the more advanced role-playing games which take weeks and weeks to write and set up, and then don't last more than an hour or two, but Dragon's Path lasts, and lasts and lasts - people spend literally months on it. Unlike normal muds, which attempt to be simulations or real life role-playing, but which fall short, we at DP have decided, using the expertise of astounding coding capabilities, of varying levels of university status, to take it one step further - in real life there are no "guilds"; by agreeing to a certain 'job' in life, you don't suddenly change. In DP you undertake a career path - you find someone to apprentice you, and you learn the relevant skills, after all, jobs are just a set of specific skills, which you can pay to train, or improve by simple practice. The different careers available are so numerous and different, that there's bound to be at least one that suits you fancies. I highly recommend this MUD for experienced MUDders, especially those that like a real challenge. .. "ENOUGH ENOUGH" I hear you cry, "how do become a part if this hugely popular fun." To which I reply, easy, just find a telnet client, Win95 and Win98 comes with one, and if you don't have that, then there are HUNDREDS of sites on the internet you can download a telnet client from. However, a really nice one, which I use, is CRT from Van Dyke ( to download Win95/98/NT version, or to download Win3.x version). One of the largest bodies of MUDers are University students, though I know people as young as 12, and as old as 53, who are frequent MUDers. If you are a university student you'll probably find you have a program like Exceed, or have a unix system, from which you can telnet. Ok, so now you have a telnet program, you will need to enter the address of a MUD; if you are using a UNIX type client you then type: 'telnet 203.38.138.10:4848'. This will connect you to Dragon's Path. If you are using a different telnet client, just enter the "203.38.138.10" part in as the IP. address, and "4848" as the port number. .. "So what happens next?" I hear you ask; well when you first connect you will have to "register a character" - this basically means you apply for a character to be created for you, and we email you your password, you need to make up a name as your "handle" and type it in. Why? Its the best way to keep out hackers and make sure you use a VALID email address. Then what? well if you don't know then you have probably never MUDed before, and I DEFINITELY suggest you read the help files available to 'newbies' (the standard term for people new to MUDding). You will be asked for a name, use the same one you used to register, then you will be asked for the password at which point you type in the password emailed to you. That's it; your in!!! You will be welcomed by people on, and they will tell you what to do next. Good Luck!!
