Staff-Student
Committees
Each academic department, or
school, has a staff-student committee, which should provide students with
an opportunity to discuss issues of concern with staff in their department.
The Union believes that, for
staff-student committees to be effective, they should meet at least three
times each semester. In most departments, the staff-student committee
includes one or more places for representatives of each year of undergraduate
courses. The Union recognises that the committee structure will depend
on the size and nature of the department, but beleaves strongly that there
should be representation for all students, to enable them to put their
views to the department.
..
Committees discuss a wide range
of academic and social issues, including library facilities, departmental
facilities, modularisation, student evaluation of courses, teaching methods,
performance of lectures and social events. Student course representatives
can contribute to the agenda in nearly all departments. Some staff-student
committees are chaired by members of staff, some are chaired by students,
and some alternate.
