Domesday Book: There was almost certainly a settlement at this location prior to the Norman Conquest, because of the importance of the ford. No buildings of more than 500 years have survived intact, but Ashford Carbonell is an ancient village that is recorded in the Domesday Book. Despite being small in area it comprises three manors. The Parish has always been agricultural, there has been a doubling of the number of houses since the 1960s, yet the population is still under 400.
