The permanent showground of Royal Welsh Agricultural Show at Builth Wells is
only a short 10 minute drive from Thin Red Line's new home in Llandrindod Wells.
As you may have seen from the announcement which has been carried recently on
our website, one of the main attractions this year was a series of daily displays
by the Kings Troop, Royal Horse Artillery. The King's Troop, or "The Troop"
as they are known, have a special significance for us, because together with
the various regiments of HM Guards and Household Cavalry, their ceremonial displays
are a living link to the former glory of the Victorian army.
The first day of the show, therefore, found us sitting in the grandstand for
both performances !!
The display they gave was an absolutely and indescribably colourful mixture
of military discipline and elegance, and all carried off with the panache for
which the "Horse Gunners" are rightly famous. I know that more than
one or two men present had their emotions severely exercised from the moment
The Troop entered the arena to a fanfare from their trumpeters, to the finale
of a high speed charge across the whole length of the arena and then out, at
the same speed, through a small gateway. We cannot bring the sounds, smells
or atmosphere of this display, but hope that the photos shown below will give
you some feel of this amazing and colourful display.
