2nd Lt Royal Fusiliers 4th (City of London) Btn 1908

This is the uniform and sword of S H Neville, who was first commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the volunteer force on 2nd August 1908 and was later promoted to Lieutenant in 1913.

The threat of French invasion led to the formation of the volunteer force in 1859. The 19th Middx Rifle Volunteer Corps, formed in 1859 by Tom Brown of Schooldays fame and the 46th Corps in 1861 became respectively the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) and adopted the dress and traditions of the parent regiment. In 1908 the London Regiment was formed as part of the territorial force and the first four battalions were badged as Royal Fusiliers.
