Raised in 1841 as the 7th Bengal Irregular Cavalry, the regiment took part in the Sikh Wars and were present at the Siege of Multan. After the mutiny they became a regular regiment as 5th Bengal Cavalry, a number they retained until 1922, when they were amalgamated with the 8th. Regiment to form the 3rd Bengal Cavalry.

The 5th had a red uniform with gold lace from 1861 and blue facings were added in 1870. This example is a British Officer (Captain), who in this regiment did not wear the facings. British officers wore ?Indian? uniform when in review, marching or drill order and when on duty with their men. Badges of rank were worn on their shoulder chains. This example is of undress uniform.
