Private 92nd.Gordon Highlanders 1885

In 1794 the 4th.Duke of Gordon raised a new regiment of highlanders mainly from his own estates, Originally numbered the 100th (Gordon Highlanders) Regiment of Foot, it was re-numbered the 92nd in 1798. In 1881 the 73rd.Stirlingshire Regiment and the 92nd were amalgamated forming respectively the 1st and 2nd Battalions.

The first battalion joined the Highland Brigade in the expeditionary force sent to Egypt in 1882 to crush the revolt of the Egyptian army. They remained in Cairo after the war and fought in the Sudan Campaign of 1884. Late in that year they assisted in the attempt to relieve Khartoum, where General Gordon was cut off by the Mahdi's troops. The attempt was unsuccessful, Khartoum was not relieved and General Gordon was killed.
