Stylish BBC1 drama about the undercover work of MI5's anti-terrorist Section B.
Spooks debuted on BBC1 at 9pm on Monday 13 May 2002, with an audience of more than 9million viewers and it continued to do well in the ratings, averaging 8.3m over the series.
Former MI5, KGB and CIA agents gave expert help to the scriptwriters – David Wolstencroft, Howard Brenton and Simon Mirren. Made by independent company Kudos Productions.

Keeley Hawes
Series three features Rupert Penry Jones and Tim McInnerny joining the cast of the MI5 drama. The series picks up from the series two cliffhanger when Tom swam off to his death (maybe). Penry Jones plays Adam Carter while McInnerny plays Oliver Mace. Matthew MacFayden and Keeley Hawes (who are involved in a real-life relationship together) will leave during the 10-part series which begins in October.
Guest stars include Frances Tomelty, Ian McDiarmid, Harriet Walter, Corin Redgrave, Anton Lesser, Arabella Weir, Owen Teale and Andy Serkis.
After the series returns to BBC1, subsequent episodes premiered on BBC3, which also aired Spooks: Access All Areas, featuring behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the cast.

Fundamentalist
The section targets anti-abortion terrorists led by Mary Kane (Lisa Eichhorn) a murderous, religious fundamentalist from the American Deep South.
Racist
In Section B's bid to stop a right-wing extremist (Kevin McNally) from provoking a racial civil war, Helen is used to help Tom befriend the wife he beats (Debra Stephenson). Warning: features a shocking, sizzling death scene, which attracted several hundred complaints.
Siege
Zoe gets caught up in a siege at the State Consulate of Turkey, and the kidnap of a banker's daughter has serious implications.
Anarchists
MI5 hero Peter Salter (Anthony Head) infiltrates a group of anarchists – and causes inter-departmental conflict involving MI6 officer Jools Siviter (Hugh Laurie).
Memoirs
The memoirs of disgraced MP Hampton Wilder (Tim Pigott-Smith) have gone missing, threatening the career of cabinet minister Richard Maynard (Nicholas Farrell) and bringing MI5 into conflict with MI6's Jools Siviter.
Terrorists
Irish terrorist Patrick McCann (Lorcan Cranitch) has information on a planned attack by Islamic terrorists on a British nuclear power station.

Bosnian
Tom's girlfriend Ellie is trapped with her daughter in a house where a bomb is about to explode. Meanwhile, the presence of Bosnian war criminal Miroslav Gradic (Karel Roden) in Britain is linked to an attack on a British army base in Northern Ireland and a car bomb which kills the Secretary of State for Ireland and his daughters. Zoe works undercover in Gradic's video shop in a bid to find out more.
Mosque
An MI5 agent is tortured inside a mosque in Birmingham after finding out it is being used for training suicide bombers. MI5 then recruits Algerian spy Ibhn Khaldun (Alexander Siddig) to infiltrate the group and he learns an attack is imminent. Meanwhile, Tessa, who was thrown out of MI5 for claiming expenses for non-existent agents, refuses to help her former colleagues and romance brews between Tom and Dr Vicki Westbrook.
Hacker
Schoolteacher Gordon Blaney (Christopher Fairbank), who has links to violent far-left group Socialist Freedom Movement, is suspected of hacking into MI5's central computer. Zoe goes undercover at his school, trying to pass herself off as an English teacher, while Danny pretends to be a journalist so he can infiltrate SFM.
Bank
Danny (who has experience of credit card swindling) goes undercover as a flashy stockbroker when the Russian Mafia steals $20billion sent by the US to Moscow. Meanwhile, Zoe gets a shock when she discovers who her boyfriend really is.
Germ Warfare
The team are assigned to take part in an Extreme Emergency Response Initiative Exercise (EERIE) to test their response to germ warfare in central London, but they soon begin to suspect it's for real.
President
When George Bush makes an unscheduled visit to London, MI5 are forced to work with the CIA and the White House security team and there's a panic when a microlight heads towards Chequers where the US President is meeting Tony Blair. Meanwhile, Tom comes to a decision about Dr Vicky and gets closer to CIA agent Christine Dale (Megan Dodds).
Briefcase
Harry has a briefcase stolen from his home, which gets very embarrassing when the French Intelligence Service reveals that an arms expert is suspected of selling Eurofighter technology to the highest bidder. MI5 is forced to recruit a 14-year-old thief to save the day.
Unions
MI5 is monitoring the trade union clamour to disrupt the public sector when it discovers a section of the British Army is planning its own strike action. Tom goes undercover as a lieutenant to uncover the truth from war hero Major Curtis (Reece Dinsdale).
Drugs
MI5 takes on the Chala Cartel, Colombia's biggest drug traffickers, following the murder of an investigative journalist. Tom and Zoe go undercover and befriend Mariela (Sophie Lombard), the girlfriend of terrorist Rafa Morientes (Daniel Cerqueira), and discover a link between the cartel and one of Britain's leading oil companies. Meanwhile, Tessa (Jenny Agutter) seeks revenge against Harry who sacked her for corruption.
Christine
Tom ignores Harry's demand that he ends his relationship with CIA agent Christine, and Danny and Zoe are forced to spy on him as evidence mounts that he is preparing a false identity. Meanwhile, there's intelligence that an American assassin has come out of retirement in Florida to carry out a hit in the UK.

1 – Harry is suffering from critical injuries but he needs to save the group and prove the innocence of the missing Tom to Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee Oliver Mace (Tim McInnerny). Helping out is new recruit Adam Carter from MI6.
2 – After clearing his name, Tom has little enthusiasm for being a spy or his colleagues after they doubted him. While considering his future, he is sent to work with MI6 agent Adam to reawaken a sleeper (Ian McDairmid) who can help them avert a potential terrorist outrage. Meanwhile, Zoe is distracted by photographer Will (Richard Harrington).
3 – Danny and the team must uncover the truth behind an assassination attempt on controversial novelist Zulifakir (Simon de Selva) while he's under Close Quarter Protection. Harry uncovers evidence that nasty MI6 man Oliver Mace may have been involved in terrorist activity.
4 – After a senior negotiator in Middle-Eastern peace talks is assassinated shortly after tipping off MI5, the team investigate the possible involvement of a newspaper editor (Corin Redgrave) and a left-wing MP (Anton Lesser). But then Harry discovers his daughter Catherine (Caroline Carver) may be involved in the conspiracy.
5 – The tension between Zoë and Danny comes to the boiling point during a mission to snare a scientist who has absconded with a lethal disease that has the potential to be mass-produced by terrorists. As they argue over her relationship with Will, their mission is changed into something far more complex.
6 – When an undercover police officer is killed by a member of a Turkish gun-running gang, Zoe is caught up in the fallout and goes on trial for conspiracy to murder.
7 – A group of hackers, possibly Islamic terrorists, are disrupting the UK's computer systems - tampering with ingredients in painkillers, wiping bank balances and disrupting traffic lights systems – so Harry's team must track them down and stop the chaos.
8 – Lord Of The Rings actor Andy Serkis plays past-it rock star Riff (who has a supermodel wife) whose son is kidnapped. Adam calls on his wife Fiona to help with the case but her investigation puts her life at risk. With Olga Sosnovska and Arabella Weir.
9 – After a notorious mercenary is brought in for questioning, MI5’s initial suspicions over his motives for snooping around Soviet arms dumps prove to be far more serious than they first imagined. Danny and Adam must use all their interrogative techniques, both legitimate and illegal, to strain the information from his lips that could save thousands of lives.
10 – Danny and Fiona are in mortal danger after they are kidnapped by a gang who demand the UK’s withdrawal from Iraq.
