The Three Heralds (14" X 15.5")
Herald messengers were attached to all great households, wearing the arms of their masters and able to recite their titles, achievements and those of their ancestors.
Later they came to exercise control over such events as tournaments and the King’s
Heralds began to adjudicate in cases brought before the Court of Chivalry.
In 1484 Richard III formally constituted his body of royal heralds to found the English
College of Heralds which still exists today.
In this 3-D relief the Heralds are armed cap-a-pie (head to foot) seated on magnificently
caparisoned horses and holding their banners at rest. Banner, shield and caparison
proclaim the identity of the master who the Herald serves.
