英国には、競馬日刊紙「レーシングポスト」、月刊雑誌「ペースメーカー」をはじめ、様々な競馬に関連した出版物がある。

ここでは、実際、競馬新聞や、雑誌の記事を引用し、言い回しや語句の解説をしながら、競馬が読めるようにしていきたい。

★１1月２８日（日）に行われた第１９回ジャパンカップについて、また日本の競馬について英国の競馬関係者はどのように考えているか、そしてどのように報道しているのか、興味深い記事をいくつか集めてみた。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

Europe's superstar only forth to Special Week　　　　　　　ジャパンカップの翌日のレーシングポスト紙から

The travel problems that blighted Montjeu's preparation for the ￡2 million Japan Cup proved the decisive factor in the race itself when the dual Derby and Arc winner could finish only a lacklustre forth to local hotshot Special Week in Tokyo yesterday.
The winner, third to El Condor Pasa a year ago, provided superstar jockey Yutaka Take with his first win in the race at the eighth attempt.
In a stirring finish Special Week, who started at 2.4-1, produced a fine turn of foot to beat the Hong Kong challenger Indigenous, 83-1 shot, by a length and a half. Last year's Derby winner High-Rise ran an excellent race to be a nose away in third, with Montjeu, the 1.7-1 favourite, three-quarters of a length behind.
The fears of trainer John Hammond that the journey to Japan had sapped Montjeu's finishing kick turned into reality in front of a wild and chearing 150,000 crowd.

Arc winners, however good they may be, hardly ever run well if they are asked to perform again that year; that everything was wrong for him in this race-the left hand truck, the firm ground, the time of year, that this connections, in particular Michael Tabor, bit off more than even this briliant colt could chew. . . . . .

There's no shortage of excuses, and for once almost any of them would look valid on its own.
But to look at the race purely in terms of Montjeu's failure to produce the lap of honour that would have confirmed him, to this column's satisfaction anyway, as the best horse to have raced in 1999 is to ignore the serious message to emerge from Tokyo. Suffice to say, the days when we could smile at the amount of money the Japanese were prepared to lay out on bloodstock for so little apparent reward in terms of international competitiveness are over.
The fact is that Japanese horses have repelled the invaders in the last two runnings of their greatest race. Further more, there was nothing flukey about the victorious of Japan's star sprinter and miler in France last year, still less about El Condor Pasa's epic attempt to lead all the way at Longchamp. I don't want to seem alarmist, but we may be on the verge of something like a new era. . . . .

How far behind our champions are the Orientals now? Are they behind at all? Can we honestly proclaim one of 'ours' a world champion in future if his championship performances have come in races in which Japanese, or maybe even Hong Kong horses, are not involved?

Home-based Japan Cup winner highlights the emergence of a major racing nation

SPECIAL WEEK rounded off a special year for his native country with an easy win in Sunday's Japan Cup, and in doing so made certain that Westerners will have more respect for Japanese form as the new century dawns.
It is undoubtedly difficult for horses from Europe to mount a serious challenge for a close-season contest over a firm course on the other side of the world, and we do not think any the worse of them when they fail.　～

The Japan Cup is a top quality international event, and an extremely valuable one with built-in allure. But like the Dubai and Breeder's Cups, it cannot constitute a world championship, and because of a host of factors-notably the travelling and seasonal variations-it is never going to produce a result that can be interpreted too literally in terms of the contenders' respective merits-home advantage unquestionably counts.
　
　Nevertheless, the Japan Cup certainly represents a valid and significant contribution, and because of its perceived success of home-based horses in it-a major racing nation is emerging from its self-imposed isolation. That is a welcome developement.
