The coast is one of contrasts, from sandy beaches to towering limestone cliffs which provide excellent rock climbing at all grades. Inland, Dartmoor furnishes a wilderness which has an untamed, unique appeal, and dotted all over the area are numerous granite tors, many of which are useful for climbing and abseiling activities.

The moorland tracts provide classical backpacking country, rivers and streams flow in profusion from the moors down typically steep sided, wooded valleys, offering some of the most eye catching countryside in England. As an area catering largely for the tourist population, all the coastal towns are easily accessible and provide a wide range of entertainments including many which are suitable for group or family visits.
