VELDT will break
your heart; they will show you a monochrome world of unrequited
love, urban paranoia, of longing and regret, and tantalising glimpses
of hope....
Like Ennio Morricone scoring a James Bond theme, VELDT are a sharkskin
suited gang; purveyors of dark, punch-drunk film-noir 60's grooves
with a sub-Portishead veneer. Bits and pieces of The Divine Comedy,
Scott Walker and early Pulp jostle for attention but never dominate
one another or threaten to make the music sound derivative in any
way. Carefully understated samples and trickling ambient keyboards
merge beautifully with succulent and fluidic guitar chords, but
it's the empathic and expressive cello work that cements together
their structure, giving their songs a timeless and monumental feel.
Formed in Brighton 2003, VELDT consists of Lloyd Wadey on vocals,
James Waterland on guitar, and Mike Alexander on cello & keyboards.
This three-piece create a textured, cinematic sound; moulding songs
that have so much astonishing passion and lovelorn madness that
anyone with a heart cannot fail to be moved. It's music borne of
frustration, of yearning, but ultimately hope. A vocalist with a
honeyed, silky, broken-hearted voice delivers honest and insightful
lyrics, all presented in a package of symphonic, melancholic, paranoid,
self-indulgent grandeur, impossibly sentimental to the point of
breathtaking soulfulness. Giving it everything they've got with
love, care and attention to detail, VELDT are nothing short of art.
