Hughes or Hewes is a common English and Welsh surname. It is undoubtedly a patronymic name based on the first (or Christian) name - Hugh, which was extremely popular in medieval times, because of the many Christian saints of that name.It may also connect with familes of Flemish weavers ,who settled in Welshpool . My family of Hughes have farmed or been drapers in the Llanfair/Oswestry area for many generations. My thanks to Great Aunt Louise Hughes, for information about this side of my family.Further Research undergoing to trace Hughes,Davies &Ellis ancestry.
