The finding of a Settlement Document issued by Stanton Parish in 1698 claiming that a Richard Griffiths and his wife were the responsibility of High Ercall Parish lends credence to the local myth that there were families of labourers, wayfarers and outcasts living on the heaths and mosslands between the villages of Stanton and High Ercall since Medieval Times that either arrived as travellers or simply moved out from the adjacent villages, and that these folk worked in temporary jobs as farm labourers or house servants. The Parish Churchwardens and Overseers were clearly anxious not to assume responsibility for their well-being.
