RECORDS AND ROLLS

Families can be traced back in time through a variety of legal and church documents----              1.Medieval Court Rolls.(written in Latin,re property transactions and felonies etc).            2.Tax Rolls.(lists of property holders paying Lay Subsidies,Hearth and Window taxes etc).  3.Poll Books.(lists of freeholders and tenant holders entitled to vote at elections).               4.Church Records.(of births,deaths and marriages also some church warden accounts).     5.Wills.(of generally the more wealthy families  up to 1837 held at Lichfield Cathedral).      6.Census Returns.(1841&1851 the first U.K.records of every household and its occupants).

 1Medieval Court Rolls- (an example from some held in the County Record Office,Shrewsbury).   1401. Griffith ap Howell and Roger his son feloniously robbed Radulphum Giffard and John Wetales of 14 oxen price 100s at Waters Upton.                                                                                         1414. Seven men feloniously murdered Griffith ap Howell at Tern Hill.
