It all began in the early 1960's,when I was doing some research on Charles Darwin at the County Record Office in Shrewsbury.I discovered there were shelves full of County Court and Church Records and I was fascinated by the following extract from one of the Medieval Court Rolls "Madoc son of Griffin held Rowton and Ellerdine in 1255 by service of conducting the King in Wales in time of War".

Griffin is a Norman corruption of the Welsh name Gruffydd or Griffiths. Were these two hamlets given as a reward to a Welsh sheep/cattle drover for leading Henry III through the mountains of North Wales during his Welsh Campaigns? Anyway the Griffiths and Madoc(Maddox) surnames are commonly found in and around these High Ercall hamlets from that time to the present day.
