The Rossendale Rambler

Having spent a week in Ireland I was struck by the curiosity of Irish place names. Look at two maps and you see two different spellings of the same name. Cahirciveen, for example has a variety of spellings, depending which map you look at or which guide book you read. Which the definitive one is I hate to guess. The situation becomes even more fraught when trying to spell the name of mountains. Here you will see two different versions on the one map and again, with differences between maps. The problem has, I believe, been caused by the various influences in Ireland over the years with Gaelic words being Anglicised and then being spelled phonetically by the locals. If you know different spellings from the ones used in the ‘Rambler’ assume both are right! I have tried to use the same spelling of each name throughout - as far as I know.
