NOTICE BOARD, September 1999FREEDOM TO ROAMThe Ramblers Association is concerned that the Freedom to Roam Bill might not be included in the Queens Speech this year. If this is true, the legislation might fail through lack of parliamentary time, given that the Government goes to the polls in spring or early summer 2001. All members are therefore urged to write to Tony Blair and/or John Prescott asking them to ensure that the legislation is included in the Queens speech this year.

FAMILY RAMBLING SUCCESSJune 28th 1999 was Family Rambling Day and, based on the turnout of the previous year, Reg Rattan, Alan Johnson and Walter Waide thought that this year, with the rain falling steadily, would be even worse. However, by the start some 30 adults and children had gathered at Waterfoot for the four mile walk led by Reg. It was a wonderful response, thanks largely to the publicity given by the ’Free Press’ in the weeks leading up to the event. Spirits were not dampened as the group ambled around the high ground above Cowpe, with the highlight of the day for the youngsters being the walk through the railway tunnel in The Glen. Children were also able to win prizes by identifying flora and fauna along the way.

WALKS MEETINGThis will be held on Tuesday 28th September at 7.30 p.m. at the Weavers Cottage. This is where we organise our walks programme for the coming year. We hope all our current walk leaders will attend and that anyone else who is interested in leading a walk will also come and join us. We are particularly interested in people who are available for leading alternative, shorter walks for those who like to go walking but are not up to the longer walks that tend to make up the bulk of our programme. As a committee, we are concerned at the lack of shorter walks we provide but without the leaders to lead them, this is a situation that is likely to continue. We want to provide a comprehensive service for all our members but we are all volunteers and leaders are providing walks that they themselves enjoy. Those who enjoy shorter walks are cordially invited to come and contribute; please come and join us.
