The Rossendale Rambler

Editorial, Spring 1998

We, and by that I mean all of us, tend to be very quick nowadays to hurl brickbats at things and organisations that we find irksome or that are not performing as we might like them to. High among these organisations are local councils and specifically, for those of us reading this newsletter, Rossendale Borough Council. It therefore give me great pleasure from time to time to throw the odd bouquet in the right direction just to show that we are as quick to praise when they get it right as we are to criticise when they get it wrong!

Some time ago I spoke to John Dwyer, the Borough Footpath Officer, about the condition and waymarking of paths around the Sky House Farm/Windy Arbour area on the hills above Edenfield and lo and behold, within a short time, the Countryside Ranger, employed by the County Council but working at the behest of the local council, has undertaken some splendid work with paths, stiles and waymarking.

When speaking to John about this, he told me it was part of the on-going programme that Rossendale have for opening rights of way and that the area fell into the Balladen/Cowpe Lowe area which was currently getting some attention. It's nice to know that attention is not only given to the high-profile paths, so well done Rossendale Borough and L.C.C. footpath workers - take a bow.

Speaking of Windy Arbour Farm, this time the one in Haslingden, I have recently received some severe criticism myself for my 'reasonable' behaviour in regard to the lack of organisation I have shown in rousing the local population to a frenzy by organising a weekly mass-trespass on footpath No.176. It seems a walker from Middleton was stopped from walking the path through the farm some weeks ago and feels the only action to be taken is of the strong variety. So if any one is interested in volunteering to organise the mass-trespass on a path that is a public right of way, please contact me and I'll pass your details on to the walker in Middleton. In the meanwhile I will continue to work quietly (but persistently) by doing things in my own, reasonable way. I am reliably informed that a prosecution from the council is imminent. The law will take it's course.
