The Rossendale Rambler

Editorial, Summer 1998

There are two things I intend to ramble on about this time, both of them very close to my heart: The first is the wonderful holiday thirteen of us enjoyed in Scotland in May (more about that inside) and to extend my thanks to Richard for his organisation of the event which turned out spectacularly well. When I go walking with Richard I sometimes think he has a direct line to He-Who-Organises-Weather, although there have been occasions when a distinct break-down in communications has been observed! As an exercise in conviviality, co-operation and friendship-building it turned out a roaring success and to those whose experience of ‘real’ wilderness walking had hitherto been somewhat limited, it was a splendid eye-opener and the precursor for future plans to expand their knowledge. Living cheek-by-jowl with people we had previously only walked with also proved very interesting, certainly for those of us who are students of human behaviour, and the week served to perhaps change previously held fixed views about some of our fellow ramblers. Here’s to the next trip, wherever it may be.

The next topic is the subject of the Rossendale Rambler Web Site which to those suffering from technophobia is likely to be a distinct turn-off. For those who have access to a computer and the Internet, please pay us a call. The URL of the site is http://www.wavenet.co.uk/users/spike and I am extremely grateful to Kevin Rattan, son of Reg, our chairman, for his unstinting contribution to making it all possible. The site contains most of the articles from the current newsletter, pen pictures of walk leaders, a list of walks for the rest of the year and a run-down of what we do and who we are. Thanks to Kevin, the site is fully interactive and there are links to other sites which might be of interest to people who care about the countryside in general and Rossendale and walking in particular.
