The Rossendale Rambler

Stargazing

by Richard Sumner

Away from town and artificial light,
How dark the sky this cold and frosty night,
Where myriad stars do sparkle in the void
Whose light you see began its journey when
The dinosaurs did populate the world.
You gaze until you have an aching neck,
And know that all mankind's a tiny speck
In space, which cares not what we do, or why;
A million years from now when we are gone,
The stars will still be shining in the sky.
We may be unimportant, but let's make
This world a better place, while we are here.
Now that’s a noble thought which pleases me,
I think I’ll have another can of beer.
