The Rossendale Rambler

NOTICE BOARD, Autumn 1998

CHRISTMAS MEAL

Joan Breeze has made a provisional booking for 20 people at Nino’s Restaurant on Friday December the 11th for 8.30 p.m. Please let Joan have your £2 deposit as soon as possible if you would like to go. It’s always a jolly good evening. Give her a ring on 01706 217439 to book your place.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

This will be held at the Weavers Cottage on Tuesday 10th November at 7.30 p.m. Everyone is welcome and there will be refreshments laid on and hopefully an instructor from Plas-Y-Brenan in North Wales will be there to give a slide show and to answer questions on topics related to mountain walking and equipment.

WALKS FOR 1999

In order to support the monthly coach rambles it was thought best not to organise walks on those Sundays. The committee were however concerned that not all people liked the idea of a coach ramble and a couple of Saturdays ago we laid on a local walk so that these people would not miss out on the opportunity for a walk. Unfortunately, no one turned up so it would not seem appropriate to arrange further such Saturday walks unless we hear of a groundswell of opinion to the contrary.

At 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday 22nd Sept., the walks leaders will be meeting at the Weavers cottage to organise the walking calendar for 1999. If you would like to lead a walk, please turn up, especially if you feel you would be able to offer a shorter, alternative walk for those people who would prefer this. Come and join us, we’ll try to make you feel welcome.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE: 6TH SEPTEMBER.

You may or may not have noticed that the date for the ‘Round the Hills walk’ in the last issue was wrong. The walk is, in fact, on the 6th September and not on the 20th as stated.

We will still be having a membership drive on the day of the walk and are grateful to Mr Walter Whittaker for allowing us space to erect a display board where we will be able to show what it is the Ramblers Association do and what they stand for.

With in excess of 400 people taking part in the walk, there must be some mileage in trying to recruit those that like to walk but are not aware of what is available for them in the Valley. Alan Johnson and I will be at Marl Pits at the start of the walk and I will be setting off shortly thereafter. Any one wishing to join me or wishing to spend some time talking to walkers about the Ramblers, please make yourselves known. We will be near the RA display.

IT’S COMPETITION TIME. STORIES FOR MUGS.

I have recently paid another visit to our sponsors at Fell and Mountain in Accrington and the good news is that there are still plenty of bargains to be had so pay them a visit and get equipped for the winter. I can only hope that it will not be as bad as the summer we’ve had !

Keith Dawson has kindly donated a number of splendid mugs, emblazoned with the name of his shop and I thought these could be offered as prizes for contributions to the Rossendale Rambler. If you have a favourite walk, a grouse, a recipe or an article that falls into the general category of local interest or outdoor activity, please let me have it. You can send it to: 38, Sandown Road, Haslingden, BB4 6PL or fax it to the number above or even E-mail it to: waidew@global net.co.uk

The last three issues have all been six pagers but unless there are some contributions from the readers in the next three months, the Christmas issue is either going to be smaller or you will have to be subjected to more of the inane ramblings of yours truly. Don’t subject yourself to that – tell me a story, get yourself in print and try to win a mug !
