The Rossendale Rambler

NOTICE BOARD, Winter 1998

PUBLIC MEETING

Our countryside officer, Jean Johnson, is arranging a public meeting where the whole issue of windfarms in the hills around Rossendale will be debated. It is hoped that representatives of both Renewable Energy Systems Ltd. as well as conservationists will debate the issue in a public forum. Dates and venue are still to be arranged but it is likely the venue will be in Bacup and that the meeting will take place some time in February. Look for the announcement in the local paper.

FESTIVAL OF WINTER WALKS

Walter and Richard will again be doing the Festival of Winter Walks, this time it will be a local walk which will visit the now famous Valley View Café on the hills above Edenfield. The walk is on the 27th December and will start at the Kay Street Car Park at 10.00 a.m. More details in the local press nearer to the day

RICHARD DOES IT AGAIN

At the AGM in November, Richard Sumner was once more awarded the ‘Walk of the Year’ certificate for his wonderful walk on the 3rd May this year which was centered on Harter Fell. I was lucky enough to have been on the walk and as I write this I can still remember every inch of the walk. Highlights were Harter Fell itself, the lunch-time stop at the Woolpack and then the climb up Border End after passing through the Roman Fort at Hardknott. A beautiful day, stunning views and the best of company. A day to remember !

CHRISTMAS BARGAINS

Fell and Mountain at Accrington are all stocked up for Christmas so pay them a visit and get 10% discount by saying you are a Rossendale Rambler. Keith Dawson, the proprietor of the shop told me at the moment there are special deals on waterproofs and that if you buy a pair of Brasher socks, you get another pair free ! That can’t be bad can it?

SCAFEL PIKE FUNDRAISER DELIVERS

Those of you who were with me on the Scafell Pike walk in June this year may remember the Yorkshire Group we met at the top. Their visit to the Pike was part of a charity walk in aid of children suffering from cancer. Margaret Harker, the lady who took our money lost her grandson aged only 15 months and she undertook to raise £500 for the charity Candlelighters. In the event, she wrote to Sheila Goggins and said that the total eventually raised was a staggering £4,128. Margaret was overjoyed at the response from everyone and wanted to thank us for being there at the top of England with her.

..AND FINALLY

It has been said over the last umpteen issues but at the risk of repeating myself please give very serious consideration to making some kind of contribution to the pages of this newsletter, as at this stage it does not look as if we will make six pages for the next issue. You do not need to be a great author – just jot something down or give me an idea for a piece of local research that might be interesting for others to read. If you have a favourite walk that you want to share with others jot it down and let me have it. If you have a criticism write me a letter. If you want to praise a particular walk leader let me know, in fact if you have anything that has something to do with walking or the countryside let me have it and we will try to include it in the pages of "The Rossendale Rambler" I can’t say fairer than that can I?
