The Rossendale Rambler

Editorial, Spring 1999

There are several things rattling around the dusty old attic that is my mind at the moment and I shall dwell upon them but briefly. First let me welcome you to this, the eleventh issue of our newsletter which on this occasion is brought to you by the magic of Windows 98 ® - which I have doggedly resisted for some time now. To those uninitiated to the world of computers, it is an operating system devised by that nice Mr Gates whose gross (sic) wealth exeeds that of Singapore. It seems to work very well now but not before I was forced to enlist the help of two computer nerds who almost literally saved me from going crackers.

Still on about computers, our web site on http://www.spike.u-net.com/ seems to be going from strength to strength and a lot of people seem to have visited it - not least those trying to sell us something and I have received offers from hotels in Wales to film shows by local cine organisations. Many of these I am able to ignore but the result of one such advertiser can be found in your envelope - I have used Shoecare myself in the past and their service is excellent. I also get e-mail from other ramblers who have visited the site, and the footpath secretary from Leeds and I exchanged electronic mail for a while. But the most important development has been our first new members, attracted to the Rossendale group by the web site - with this newsletter I welcome them to the ranks of the Rossendale Ramblers and hope they will stay and maybe even join us on our walks.

And now to the sad demise of the Valley View Café, that warm and comfortable haven, high above Edenfield that has been the source of so much pleasure to outdoor enthusiasts since it opened in the summer of 1997. Also missed will be ‘mine host’ Steve Redstone who, through his cheerful and enthusiastic promotion of all things Rossendalean, was almost immediately forgiven for being a southerner! It was also encouraging to see back issues of the ‘Rambler’ lying about the café for people to read. I hope Steve is not too disappointed about the smallmindedness of the local council in closing him down, especially when the County Council allows a waste transfer station to encroach the green belt on Tooter Hill! Perhaps he’ll even join us on on some of our walks - he will always be welcome to share my butties.
