Destiny's Child
Formed when they were still dreaming of ponies,
this Texan foursome remain the goodie-two-shoes of pop

Astronaut jokers love to scare the whoopee out of ground control by yelling "Houston, we have a problem!" into their mics, and then screaming "Aaaargh!" before collapsing into fits of laughter. Houston definitely doesn't have a problem: the four Texan beauties are teadily putting the Lone Star state on the map for far better things than sand, steers, oil, and being a top spot for shooting at Presidents. And while their second album The Writing's On The Wall might be lacking in saucy sex songs laced with "street" talk and innuendo, no one can claim LaTavia, LeToya, Beyoncé and Kelly fail on the melody front - as their 1997 self-titled album proved with its worldwide hit No No No.

The story of how they formed might just explain the origins of their sweet-and-innocent image..
"LaTavia came over to my house one day and we were playing with our Barbies," says Kelly. "She heard me sing and said, 'I want you to try out for my group'. I went to the audition - I was really nervous - but I made it."     Under the guidance of Beyoncés dad - who manages the band - Destiny's Child came about after several years of mini-pops style activity. "We had eight or nine people in the group at one point," says LaTavia. "Three dancers, two lead singers..it was a band and a half. and we were, like, nine-years-old!".

Almost called Borderline, Cliché,"even The Dolls," huffs LaTavia, the band eventually settled on their monicker after stumbling on the word "Destiny" in the Bible. All four are religous, but haven't yet got round to taking a preacher on tour with them. Still, life on the road hasn't been too sinful - and they insist that there aren't hundreds of male groupies at their beck and call.

"We tend not to get too much trouble like that," says Beyoncé. "A couple times we've been playing and there's been guys being a bit disrespectful, shouting stuff at us, but we just get on with doing our show." (MP)
