AN MP has been jailed for a day and persuaded members of the public to stump up his bail money.
Bob Neill. who represents Bromley and Chislehurst. was held in a mock cell at The Glades shopping centre. Bromley High Street last Wednesday.
He took part in the stunt. which saw eight figures including town centre manager Ian Payne 'arrested,' to raise funds for the Stroke Association.
Mr Neill said: "The Stroke Association is a very valuable and worthwhile charity. .
Speaking as someone who has served as a member of a strategic health authority. I have been very impressed with the work The Stroke Association does both nationally and locally."
He was snared for attempting to buy dodgy aftershave and had to ring round to get donations to secure his release. The MP's crime was publicly announced by Town Crier to the Mayor of London Peter Moore. In total. the prisoners raised more than £6.000 and were rewarded with a champagne lunch.
Stroke Association Fundraising manager John Thorogood said:" I am overwhelmed by the amazing amount of money raised and the enthusiasm of our felons. they did an excellent job and everyone really entered into the spirit of the event.
"It was great fun and our thanks go to everyone involved." . Charity staff also offered free blood pressure checks and information to shoppers. The Stroke Association runs an information helpline from 9am to 5pm. Monday to Friday on 0845 3033 100.
