CELEBRATING TRAFALGAR

Union flags fluttered and cheers erupted as Hounslow greeted the New Trafalgar Dispatch earlier this month.

The weather was typically English- overcast and drizzly - but the pageantry of the occasion lifted many hearts outside the Holy Trinity Church on Hounslow High Street.

Beckoned by the town crier, more than 200 people gathered outside the church on 6 September to witness the New Trafalgar Dispatch call in on its journey from Falmouth to Westminster - recreating the travels made by Lieutenant Lapenotiere as he brought news of the Battle of Trafalgar victory 200 years ago.

After a brief welcome speech by the chair of the New Trafalgar Dispatch committee, Bill White, the town crier emerged once more, announcing the approach of the post chaise.

As soon as the carriage had drawn up to the crowd, the dashing Lapenotiere, played by Feltham actor Alex Price, bounded towards the mayor, bringing urgent news from Cape Trafalgar.

"The battle ended finally the threat of invasion by the armies of the French Emperor Napoleon," he told a cheering crowd.

Lapenotiere then handed the new dispatch to young naval officer Sub Lt Peter Barker, who presented it to Hounslow's Mayor, Cllr Darshan Grewal.

A plaque marking the event was unveiled, as Mr White explained: "In all, Lt Lapenotiere made 21 stops to change horses. His final stop before arriving at the Admiralty at lam on the morning of 6 November 1805 was here in Hounslow."

Lapenotiere returned to his post chaise and continued on to Osterley House, where another special ceremony, also involving historic actors, took place.

Among the special guests were descendants of the real Lapenotiere, including fourth great niece Roma Richards, of Perranporth in Cornwall, and her grand

daughter Hayley George, of Feltham.

Mrs George said she was thrilled to be part of the celebrations.

"It was a really interesting and exciting day, and it was great to see what Lapenotiere achieved,. she

said. "It made me very proud."

Mrs Richards said she began tracing the family tree more than 10 years ago. "We've known that we were descendents of his for a long time," she said. "But I dont't think he was quite as handsome as the modern Lapenotiere - his nose was much longer!"
