ESHA ROY
AMAN in a
bright red coat and a plumed hat
was crying "Oyez Oyez" and
shaking a bell at the Ansal
Plaza. Peter Moore is hired to
cry. Russia, USA, Philippines,
Hong Kong are just a few
countries his job has taken him.
For 25 years, Moore has been the
Town Crier to the Mayor of
London. It's his duty to announce
news about the royal family. He
|
announced
the wedding of Prince Charles and
Princess Diana and was at
Buckingham Palace to give news
about the birth of Prince
William. Corporates, charities,
pubs and shopping malls around
the world have hired him for
their functions. "I was an actor
and have performed on stage,
radio and in TV serials. I one
day read the city' council's ad
asking for a Town Crier. I
auditioned for the post and
haven't looked back since," says
Moore. |
He does not
miss acting at all. "The world is
now my stage, and what a large
and wonderful stage it is. I get
to do what most people can only
dream of doing. I travel to
wonderful places, meet lovely
people and stay in great hotels
and get paid in the bargain,"
says Moore, who is visiting India
to promote an Internet company.
The Town Crier is so famous that
he is recognized in all corners
of the world, Minneapolis or
Chennai. "I went to Le
Meriden |
yesterday and
the children thought I was Father
Christmas. Children are
fascinated by my costume, I get
mistaken for Captain Hook. In
Chennai, I was followed by a
street child. I gave him Rs 100,
his eyes lit up and he said:
'You're a King!'" says Moore.
Sometimes Moore gets unusual
requests. A young man from
Chennai sent him a mail that he
should ring his bell and announce
that he was proposing to his
girlfriend when they visited the
London Tower. "I |
Couldn't
oblige as I was already committed
to coming here,"he says. It's his
costume-costing about 2,000
pounds that breaks the ice and
wins him friends, says Moore. The
best part of the job is that he
is carrying on a tradition, which
began in 1066 AD when news of
Britain's invasion was passed
from place to place by hired
individuals. The "Oyez Oyez"
(roughly meaning "hark" or
"listen") they began, Moore is
ringing out now. |
