London
Town Crier and Toastmaster Peter Moore is
a Freeman of the City of London and has
been a well known figure around London for
over 25 years.
How long have you lived in
London?
I am now 65 and have been living here ever
since I was 16. I came to London after
losing my parents in the war. I live in
Wandsworth near Wimbledon.
Can
you remember your first impressions of the
city?
My
earliest memory of London was going to
Tower Bridge as a child and seeing the
Tower of London and the rest of the city
lit up at night. It was a wonderful sight
then and still is today. I think my
favourite view though is from the top of
Tate Modern across to St Paul's.
What
are your favourite London buildings?
My
favourite is the art deco Hoover Factory
building near Uxbridge. I particularly
like Shakespeare's Globe as well and also
the small patches of our city where you
can escape the hustle and bustle. St
Paul's Church in Covent Garden has a
lovely garden to relax in.
What are your favourite places to
eat?
There's a pub in Whitehall called The
Clarence. It's all lovely home made food
and especially great fish and
|
chips. I've seen loads
of celebrities and politicians in there
over the years.
And
for a drink? I
still drink in the old traditional Fleet
Street pubs, even though the newspapermen
who once frequented there have long gone.
Otherwise, I like nothing more than a pint
at the William Morris pub in a place
called Merton Abbey Mills near Wimbledon.
It's an old watermill with the River
Wandle flowing past and perfect for a
sunny summer afternoon. Otherwise, I like
The Anchor on The South Bank.
What do you like most about
London? I am a
fervent believer in the famous Samuel
Johnson quote, 'When a man is tired of
London, he is tired of life, for in London
there is all that life can afford.' I
think that says it all
And
your favourite galleries?
The John Soane
Museum is a real treasure trove but also I
really like Zandra Rhodes' Fashion and
Textile Museum, which is absolutely at the
other end of the spectrum, I remember
Zandra Rhodes from the 196Os, I am very
red and she is very pink. I can also lose
myself for hours in The British
Museum.
How
do you travel around
London? On my red
Honda motorcycle. I have turned up
everywhere
|
on that: Buckingham
Palace, The Tower of London. I am like
Superman, always changing into uniform in
phone boxes.
What
would you change about
London? Town Criers
are outdoors most of the time. so it's
always nice when it's not raining. I
wouldn't change anything actually, London
is an ever changing city in its own
right.
What
is your favourite day out of London?
It has to be
Windsor. The castle is wonderful and it is
the official residence of our Queen.I take
American visitors there a lot. It's great
to walk in Windsor Great Park and stop for
tea and cake.
What
top tip would you give to a visitor to
London? While all
the stuff in the city centre is fantastic,
don't forget all the wonderful places to
visit in the wider world of Greater
London. This is also where you find what I
call 'real' London.
Where
can we find you this
month? Every Sunday
I am at Hamleys in Regent Street saying
hello to all the kids, and for the
Wimbledon championships I will be there
welcoming all the visitors to the
tennis
