Oyez,
the Royal
Crier's in town
IF
you're out on the streets today,
chances are you will run into a man in red
and gold with white breeches, black boots
and a hat with ostrich feather plumes,
ringing a huge bell. That would be Peter
Moore, Royal Town Crier of London, who is
currently in town as part of a promotion
"The Sify iway challenge". The challenge
will enable the target audience to walk
into a Sify iway with a special membership
card and experience 30 minutes of free
broadband Internet surfing at iways.
Prizes up for grabs include a trip for two
to Colombo, word space receiver, palmtops
and over a 100 other exciting prizes.
Getting back to Moore, the post of Town
Crier reportedly dates back to 1066 when
the news of William of Normandy's invasion
of England was passed on from town to town
by individuals employed to call out the
King's proclamation. The Town Crier was
also the nation's first "talking"
newspaper. With his
"Oyez, |

LONDONSE
AAYA MERA DOST: Peter Moore, the
Royal Town Crier
|
Oyez", he
read out edicts, laws, and news
to the then largely illiterate
populace. He was also the chief
bearer of news on royal births
and deaths, plagues, and
victories in wars. Moore, a
member of the London Tourist
Board, wears |
ceremonial
robes stitched by none less than
the Queen's robemaker. And those
highly effective bells are cast
by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry,
the company that made the Liberty
Bell of the United States.
