LONDON'S
loudest resident has something
new to shout about - Southwark's
town crier Peter Moore is now a
freeman.
After more than 21 years greeting
toursits visiting the capital,
leading parades and attending
various prestigious ceremonies,
Peter has now been awarded the
Freedom of the City of
London.
He joins the Queen, Nelson
Mandela and Sir Cliff Richard who
have all received the title which
dates back hundreds of years and
bestows many old-fashioned
honours such as being able to
herd sheep across London
bridge.
The Mayor of Southwark, Janet
Heatley, was among many guests
who attended the award ceremony
at the guild hall on Monday, where
peter received a special
medallion and scroll.
The ex-actor, who lives in
Wandsworth Common said, "I am
very proud to have been nominated
for such an award because of my
work. I really love what I do -
being out all day meeting people
and sharing with them the history
of London." |

He can often be
spotted in his trademark scarlet
robes and black hat wandering the
streets of the capital rining his
bell, shouting 'oyez, oyez' and
giving directions.
However, he does get strange
requests from some members of the
public he bumps into.
He said, "One man asked me what
day they did executions at the
Tower of London. Another woman
asked when it would stop
raining?"
Not only is Peter town crier for
Southwark, he also carries the
same title for Merton, Camden,
Tower Hamlets and Ealing councils
plus Covent Garden Market and St
Katherine's Dock.
Peter's motto is 'have bell will
travel' and indeed his work has
taken him all across the globe,
meeting prime ministers, kings,
queens, film stars.
He added, "but London is the best
city in the world. There's a real
mis of people and so much history
here. |
