LONDON'S town crier has come to the rescue of a fire station whose memorial carp pond was trashed by thieves.
Peter Moore read about the theft of the fish from the memorial pond at Tooting fire station and decided he would replace the Koi carp.
One of the valuable fish was taken and the other killed in the raid on the Trinity Road pond last week.
Both had been donated by the families of dead firefighters Peter Taylor and Michael Evans, who served there.
Mr Moore said: "I read about it in South London Press and was shocked. These firefighters do a great job for our area and a lot of charity work. It's only right to give something back."
Mick Murphy, of Tooting's Red Watch, has been looking after the garden for a decade.
He said: "I'm due to retire next week and this was going to to put a blight on the end of my career. So I'm grateful to Peter for coming forward and offering to re-stock the pond."
Wandsworthpolice are still investigating the incident. |
