DOZENS of children stepped back in time to enjoy an after- noon of September sunshine at a Victorian fun day.
Crowds of youngsters and their families filled Red Cross Gardens in Borough for an afternoon of dressing up in Victorian costume, maypole dancing and toy-making.
Agnes Knoll, parks facilitator for the Bankside Open Spaces Trust, which runs the garden, said: " It went really well. It was a really warm afternoon for September and people turned up in big numbers.
"I think a lot had turned up from local schools."
Organisers adopted the theme because the garden had originally |
been built in the Victorian era before falling in to disrepair in modern times.
"It took a heritage lottery grant to restore it two years ago and since then it has become an oasis of green in the bust area," said Agnes.
"There were plenty of activities to keep children busy on the day but most popular was the slightly out--of-season maypole.
She added: "It was not really the right season for it but we had one set up during our May festical and it was so popular we brought it back. Maypoles were also very popular in Victorian times, and this garden used to have one as well." |
