Merton's town crier will be ringing his
bell for the next fortnight to welcome
people to Wimbledon for the
tennis. Peter
Moore, who has also been the London Town
crier for 25 years, is promoting the
Borough of Merton. He will spend the next two weeks
shouting the attractions on offer in
Merton, including the theatre, the shops
and village. He
said:"I come here to ring my bell and tell
everyone about the history of Merton

and all the things there are to do
here."Mr Moore is an expert on the history
of the area and has a number of stories
which he enjoys to tell, including the
open affair between Nelson and Lady
Hamiltonin Merton. He has become something
of a celebrity, featuring on TV and in
national newspapers as well as making
friends with players and fans. He is also
a popular figure with those qneueing for
tickets and with staff working on the
gates. He said: "I am featured on TV
channels around the world. The ambience is
superb here and it's nice to see the same
faces "I have been coming here for over 20
years and it's great to come back and meet
up with old friends." The crier, a Tim
Henman fan, is hoping that there will be
success for Britain at this year's event.
He said: "We need a champion."
