My father John Patrick Burgess had completed an apprentice as a joiner in the early 30’s and went on to building houses,including one for Alf

who had remarried to Judith Tong , nee Ball, a widow with a son Ray.

John [Jack] volunteered to join the N.Z. Army in Dec 1939. He was transferred to the Engineers (7^th. Field Coy. 20504) and embarked with the

2^nd echelon to the Middle East. They were diverted to the U.K because of the German invasion threat and were stationed in Surrey.

Jack was able to visit Uncle George, Auntie Beatrice and Harold King while on leave. After sailing back to Egypt in early 1941 Jack served

in Greece & Crete.

Further action in the Nth African campaigns followed and Jack was mentioned in dispatchesand was promoted to Seargeant.

After a years service as an instructor, back in New Zealand when he married June Cave,

Jack was posted back to Italy. He was severly wounded on the push to Florence and sent back home in Nov. 1944.

After a long convalescence Jack started a joinery business and he and June Had six children.

Jack was active in community affairs and became a Borough Councillor in 1963. He was a supporter of the local Museum

and a local Park was named Burgess Place in his honour.

Jack retired early and started a commercial orchard in the early 70’s. Ill heath slowed him down

but he made a lot of fine furniture for his family and helped in the building of my house.
