What I have been told. He called himself Thomas Patterson Hyder.
Patterson was his mother's maiden name and my father thought that she was
probably Scottish. They were married in Croydon and Eliza had been born
there. He came from Chatham. Their youngest child Alice refused to
tell her children anything about her parent’s background when they were
starting to trace their family history.
2. Their gravestone in Brockley Cemetery. Thomas P Hyder September 3rd 1912 in
his 55th year, Eliza his wife May 8th 1923 aged 65, also of James T Hyder March
12th 1941 aged 61, also Alice Ellen Verrier daughter of Eliza and Thomas 28th
May 1981 aged 94

4. Search for marriage certificate. The only marriage in Croydon between
a Thomas Hyder and Eliza (Elizabeth) Crabb - February 7th 1875, Thomas Paterson
Hyder, 21, bachelor, clerk, Croydon, father James Hyder, licenced victualler. Eliza Crabb,
22, spinster, Croydon, father John Crabb, boot maker.
5. When were they born? Thomas between 1853/4 (from marriage certificate) and
1856/7 (census and gravestone). Eliza between 1852/3 (from marriage
certificate), 1854/5 (from 1881 census), 1856/7 (from 1901 census) and 1857/8
(from gravestone).
6. Birth certificate - Thomas. 16th November 1857, Queen Street,
Chatham. Father James Hyder, journeyman boot maker, mother Ann Hyder
formerly Pattison. Census information confirms the details and his father
ran a beer house. Age does not match marriage certificate but ties in
with later information.
7. Birth certificate - Eliza. The only Eliza Crabb, in the indexes, born
in Croydon. 20th May 1850, King Street, Croydon. Father William
Crabb, servant, mother Patience Crabb formerly Pettifer. Father's details
and her age do not match marriage certificate.
8. Supplementary evidence from censuses and directories to support the fact
that this is the correct Eliza Crabb. 1851 Census. 5 King Street, Croydon
- Patience Ann Crabb, mar, 34, Eating House keeper, Barrington, Glouc. William,
son, 8, Croydon, Jane, dau, 3, Croydon, Eliza, dau, 10 months, Croydon.
1861 Census. Dog and Bull Yard, Surrey Street, Croydon - Patience Crabb, mar,
43, charwoman, Barrington, Glouc. Eliza, dau, 10, Croydon, John, son, 7,
Croydon. 1871 Eliza is at 4 Dog and Bull Yard aged 20. 1876 Croydon
directory - Thomas Hyder Dog and Bull Yard, Surrey Street.
9. Birth of first child after marriage. 30th October 1875, 3 Dog and Bull
Yard, Surrey Street, Croydon, Beatrice Eleanor, father Thomas Hyder, waiter,
mother Eliza Hyder formerly Crabb. The baby died in 1876.
10. Annie Hyder. On 1881 census age 8 born Croydon. Date of birth
1872/3. No entries for Ann/Anne/Annie Hyder or Crabb in indexes.
From another 1851 census entry in Croydon it is possible that Eliza had a
sister Mary Ann, so indexes checked for Mary Ann Hyder or Crabb. 19th
October 1872, Workhouse infirmary, Croydon, Mary Ann, mother Eliza Crabb
