John Henry Plumb was born April 16, 1828 at Barrowby, Lincolnshire, England. His parents were Francis Plumb and Ann (Anne) Johnson. He lived his childhood in England. He was married to Miss Alice Parker in April 1850 and came to the United States with his bride a few days after their marriage. They arrived at Upper Sandusky, Wyandotte County, Ohio the last of May 1850. His wife died in November 1852.

Some time later he married Miss Millicent Parker, a sister of his first wife. They were married in Wyandotte County, Ohio. To this union two children were born: Valentine Parker (18571938) married 1) Phoebe "Minnie" Robertson and 2) Clara Plumb; George Francis (18581914).

His second wife died in 1860. He married Miss Rebecca Wise in Wyandotte County, Ohio and in 1862 he came to Mills County, Iowa.

To this union three children were born: John H. Jr. (1864-1960) married Ella L. Wise - buried at Wesley Chapel Cemetery; Charles Alvin (1867-1885) drowned at age 18, buried at Wesley Chapel Cemetery and Mary Catherine (1862- ????) married Richard Gray of Waconda South Dakota.

John and Rebecca Plumb were charter members of Wesley Chapel Church. They lived north of Hastings, Iowa near Wesley Chapel for 32 years engaging in farming. In 1894 they moved to Hastings, Iowa and a year later October 10, 1895 John Henry Plumb, Sr. died. In 1897 Rebecca Plumb returned to the old farm home with her son John for 9 years, when she again moved to her home in Hastings until 1922 when she moved to Malvern where she could be near her son John. Rebecca Plumb died April 3, 1925 at the age of 88 years and 9 days.

John Plumb, Sr. donated a plot of land 170 feet wide and 20 rods long to erect and maintain a house of worship and as a burial place for its members and the community at large. This is where Wesley Chapel Cemetery and Church were built.

John and Rebecca Plumb are both buried at Wesley Chapel Cemetery.
