Went to America in his 40s on May 4 1843. Went to California in the winter of 1849/50 in the Gold rush with close friend W.B. Wilson, Stayed about 5 years.

Lucinder (pictured above with Valentine) was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio daughter of John Gosner and Catherine Devore. She died in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Valentine Plumb was born February 14, 1820 at Barrowby, Lincolnshire, England. His parents were Francis Plumb and Ann Johnson. He spent his early childhood in England, where he was raised on a farm and received only twelve months of schooling. He came to America May 4, 1843 and located in Richland County, Ohio. In 1845 he moved to Wyandotte County in Ohio. In 1850 he went to California during the gold rush and engaged in the mining and merchandise business. He returned to Ohio in 1855. He married Frances L. Bland on April 4, 1856 in Wyandotte County, Ohio and in the same month came to Mills County, Iowa to buy land. He bought 200 acres of land and returned home by way of Cincinnati to find his wife in declining health; she died December 25, 1856 along with a still-born child.

He returned to Mills County, Iowa and bought more land. After the purchase of the original farm of 200 acres, he added to it a total of 1000 acres.

He married Lucinda Anne Gonser March 14. 1861. They were the parents of ten children.

In 1876 he suffered a heavy loss by fire in which a valuable barn and eleven horses with a large amount of farm produce and' implements were burned to the amount of$6,000.

He was a member of the Board of Supervisors in Mills County for four years and chairman of that body for two years.

He was one of the original founders of Wesley Chapel Church and a charter member. Valentine Plumb's farmland was deeded by President Franklin Pierce. He had literally doz­ens of entries of buying and selling farmland in Mills County in the 1860's and 1870's.

He was a man of great energy, full of public spirit and very influential. Valentine Plumb died March 2, 1882 and is buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery.

Valentine Plumb was born December 5, 1843 at Barrowby, Lincolnshire, England, son of William and Sarah (Gray) Plumb and grandson of Francis and Ann (Johnson) Plumb of Barrowby. Grandmother Ann Plumb came to America in 1853, and on to Mills County.

Valentine in December 1867 married Charlotte Llewellyn who was born in Wales to William and Elizabeth (Evans) Llewellyn. In 1870 on the ship Nebraska, Valentine and his wife sailed for New York and on to Mills County where they joined Valentine's brother, Francis/Frank, and worked for his uncle Valentine (1820) for several years, then rented a farm until about 1875 when he purchased a farm in Shelby County, Iowa.

 

To Valentine and his wife Charlotte was born Hannah Mary, in Mills County who later married Nels T. Peterson in 1897 and they had four children. Hannah Mary and husband Nels are buried at Harlan along with her parents, Valentine in 1935 and Charlotte in 1920.
