Apparently he was committed to Cane Hill lunatic asylum in his fifties. He escaped, and in those days if you were on the run for a fortnight you were free. He moved into his girlfriend's (Mrs Fox). When he died his wife and Mrs Fox fought for custody of his body. Harriet won.

He was buried in Nunhead Cemetery in grave number 36625, square 88. His address listed in the cemetery records was 48A Lower Road, Rotherhithe, London. It is believed to be Mrs Fox's address.
