LAN Internet Access with Pocket Internet Explorer

Please report Problems, Errors, Omissions and General Comments to jon@whiten.globalnet.co.uk.

The aim is to discuss connection to a LAN Internet feed from a Windows CE HPC via a Windows 95 Workstation connected to the LAN.

Overview

For some it is desirable to be able to connect to the Internet via their workplace LAN (TCP/IP) for the purpose of accessing their personal mail box or news feed for example. This document will look at using WinGate 2 (www.deerfield.com) to act as gateway between the HPC and the LAN Firewall/Proxy Server.

It has to be assumed that at this stage the user has a valid connection to the LAN, is running Windows 95 with HPC Explorer 1.1 and knows the IP addresses of both the Windows 95 Workstation and the Firewall/Proxy Server.

This procedure may work with NT Workstation 4.0 but is un-tested.

In order to complete this operation, we will look at 2 separate areas:-

  1. Configuring WinGate 2 to connect to the Firewall.
  2. Configuring the HPC to connect to WinGate

The IP address of my machines are 192.1687.0.1 for the firewall and 192.168.0.2 for the Windows 95 workstation.

1. Configuring WinGate 2 to connect to the LAN Firewall.

Download WinGate 2 from www.deerfield.com and install according to the instructions included. Do not worry about having to configure any Dial-Up settings.

  • Make sure WinGate is running (Start/Programs/WinGate/WinGate just to be sure).
  • Fire up GateKeeper and Log in as Administrator, Server = localhost.
  • Right-Click on Services, Select New, Service, WWW Proxy Service.
  • Click General Tab.
    • Ensure that 'Bind to specific interface' is selected (checked).
    • Enter the IP address of this Windows 95 machine. e.g. 192.168.0.2
  • Click Connection Tab.
    • Select 'Through Cascaded Proxy Server'
    • Enter IP address of Filewall/Proxy Server into 'Server' box. e.g 192.168.0.1
    • Enter '80' into 'Port' box.
  • Click 'OK'
  • Right-Click on Services, Select New, Service, DNS Service.
  • Click General Tab.
    • Ensure that 'Bind to specific interface' is selected (checked).
    • Enter the IP address of this Windows 95 machine. e.g. 192.168.0.2
    • Ensure that the 'Allow request to initiate dialler' is not selected (un-checked).
  • Click 'OK'
  • Click on File/Save Changes to commit the new setup to disk.

2. Configuring Pocket Internet Explorer

  • Fire up PIE (I am using PIE 1.1 on an HP320LX)
  • Click on View/Options
  • Click on 'Proxy Server' tab
    • Make sure that 'Use Proxy Server' tab is selected (checked)
    • Enter the IP address of the Windows 95 workstation into the 'http://' box. e.g. 192.168.0.2
    • Enter '80' onto the 'Port' box.
  • Click on 'Auto Dial' tab
    • Make sure that 'Use AutoDial' tab is not selected (un-checked)
  • Click on 'OK'

In Use

  • Make sure that WinGate is running.
  • Make sure that HPC Explorer is running and there is a working connection to the HPC
  • Entering a www address into PIE should result in the page being displayed.
