This is a photographic study of single-handed general
practitioners - doctors who essentially work alone and without the backup of
a large practice - in the remote areas of Scotland. It consists of photographs
of the doctors, all with the beautiful landscapes of Scotland behind them. The
portraits are accompanied by personal accounts which demonstrate the importance
of this type of medical practice to Scotland and the contribution these dedicated
physicians make to communities in the Highlands and Islands and other remote
rural areas of Scotland. The book is thus much more than a collection of photographs
- it is a sociological comment on a particular aspect of medical practice and
thereby a reflection of the needs of remote communities and a barometer of the
preparedness of the country to answer these needs.
Striking black and white full-page photographs portray a unique group of individuals
at home in the stunning beauty of the Highland scenery. At a time when questions
are being asked about the future of single-handed practitioners, this book is
a timely reminder of the role in the National Health Service.
