About Butterflies

Location

Butterflies is a private day nursery, offering excellent childcare and education for 2 – 8 year olds.

We are based in Sulby Glen, in a 150 year old converted textile mill, surrounded by beautiful countryside on the banks of the Sulby River.

We are ten minutes from the centre of Ramsey and on a main commuter route to Douglas.  We have a large off road carpark for safe arrivals and departures.

The Nursery Environment

Our mainroom is very large, bright and airy.  The room is divided up into areas, a home corner, wet area, writing area, etc.

Our art area is well stocked with everything you can imagine and more.  We use a lot of recycled resources and tend to make use of anything that is given to us. We have pots and jars of feathers, beads, matchsticks, buttons, wiggly eyes. The children are allowed to request what they want to work with while in this area, and we always have some sort of art or craft activity going on every day.

We have a large expanse of carpet and plenty of construction toys, cars, train track and large cardboard boxes.

We have a very large home corner, with an area that is used as a house and another area, which can become anything from a hairdressers to a travel agents.

There is lots of tables for 'tabletop' activities such as jigsaws, pegs, playdough and weighing.

We have a ball pool of amazing proportions, spongy shapes and mats,  a wide range of small apparatus such as ropes, balls, stilts parachutes and bean bags for inside physical play.

Our book area is well stocked with fiction and non fiction books, magazines, and brocheres.

Views of the main room

We have smaller quiet room which is used for more focused activities, such as circle time or a small group game.  The children who need a rest also use this area to have a sleep.  There are bed mats and blankets available at all times.

We have a colourful kitchen in which we cook at least once a week.  We also prepare our healthy snacks here.

We have made the decision not to watch television or videos during our nursery day, although we do take video of your children doing activities as they love to watch themselves on television.

Views of the quiet room

We have some nursery pets which the children take turns to look after.

We have two Guinea Pigs called Tardis and Dalek, stick insects and goldfish called Ffinlo, and Fergus.

We have a huge garden that is divided into areas too.  We have a willow dome to hide in, and for story telling. A vegetable patch where the children grow fruit and vegetables all year round and a digging area (with plenty of mud) so they can pretend to be builders. There is a road all the way round the garden for bikes, scooters and tractors. There is a wooden wendy house and an igloo for hiding in.  The children have access to lots of equipment such as beams, tyres, fish boxes, drainpipe and rope for imaginative play.

We also have a quiet area over by the river (fenced off of course).  The children can just sit and read a book or watch the wildlife on the river.

We also take advantage of the amazing countryside around the nursery by going on lot's of walks.  We have the Sulby Claddaghs just around the corner, the Wildlife Park on our doorstep and more fields of animals than you would ever believe was possible in such a small village.

Outside

On our registration certificate we are registered for 40 children, but we have made the decision only to take 24 nursery children at a time. (and 10 holiday club children during school holidays.)  We can boast that your child will have nearly double the amount of space than any other nursery on the Island, and the areas inside the nursery never seem crowded. We understand the importance that space makes to a child's development. We can also boast a staff ratio of 1: 6  (we are required to have a ratio of 1: 8 by the DHSS)

Starting at Butterflies

We believe that children should be given time to settle in, and that you always know best how your child will react to coming to the nursery for the first time.  We will provide you with information to help you with this difficult separation period.  This information includes tips on how you can get your child ready to start at nursery.

We are happy for you to come in and see us for short periods before your child starts at nursery and we are always on hand to offer advice.  Every child copes differently with this and we need to get to know your child as much as they need to get to know us, so the more we see you the easier it is.

We always advise that you bring your child for a look around before you decide to send them to us.

Holiday , Morning and Afternoon Club

We run a holiday club for children from 4 – 8 years, which runs during all the school holidays except bank holidays and TT week.

We have a small number of spaces and offer excellent provision with lots of age appropriate activities, and a home from home atmosphere.  The group have their own member of staff who has experience with school age children. We spend alot of time outside

Our school clubs before and after school are for children from Sulby School only. We will pick up and drop off your child and give them a snack in the afternoon as well as provide fun activities for them to do.

Registration

There is a £30 Registration fee which is payable on application.

This fee goes towards administration costs.

Every child will be issued with a kit bag when they start and a bound book of achievement when they finish their pre school year.

There is no registration fee for the holiday club.
