The Years Since 1991

Sadly the hopes that the Works at Ferrybridge would continue to thrive and provide much need employment for the people of Wyke were dashed in 1993, when AE Piston Products announced that they would be closing the factory, making the 260 employees redundant. After some half hearted resistance the workforce accepted their fate.

Local attempts were made to encourage the owners to sell the factory site only to omeone who would continue to use the site and the buildings for engineering manufacturing. But to no avail!

After some two years the site was put up to sale with planning permission for housing development and eventually, in 1998 the site was sold and work started on the emolition of the buildings and clearance of the site.

Encouraged by local historians a search was made to locate the original foundation stone, laid down by Lady Hoyas in April 1891. Eventually it was discovered but sadly the artefacts buried beneath the stone had long since disappeared - stolen by some unseen Wykeite hand.

A housing development proceeded on the site which was eventually renamed Harbour Point and a suitable public resting place was found within the site for the foundation stone, along with a Portland stone plinth with words commemorating the fact that once upon a time the area was once the manufacturing home of the world famous Robert Whitehead torpedo.
