What's involved in getting a licence:

1) A minimum of 45hrs of training to include at least:

  • 25 hours instruction with a qualified instructor, covering  a range of standard exercises-- including hovering, climbing, descending, turning, autorotations (gliding the helicopter without engine power), spot turns, quick stops, navigation, confined areas and basic instrument flying
  • 10 hrs of solo flight (no instructor on board)
  • 5 hrs of solo cross-country flight (included in the 10hrs of solo), to include one flight of at least 100 nautical miles (185km), with two landings  at different aerodromes

2) Examination passes (multiple choice) in the following subjects:

  • Aviation Law
  • Operational Procedures
  • Human Performance and Limitations
  • Navigation and Radio Aids
  • Meteorology
  • Aircraft General
  • Principles of Flight
  • Flight Performance and Planning
  • Communications

3) A flight skill/navigation test and a radio communications practical test

How long will it take?
As little as a few months given a full-time commitment, hard work and good weather. Infrequent flying or bad weather will extend this. Someone flying once or twice a week should finish in around a year.
