Gwent Closed Championships
The Gwent Chess Championships got off to a flying start. Many of the top players had a bye in round 1. Among the upsets, Adams draws with Weatherlake, Gilbert draws with Owen and Grayson loses in 11 moves to Coles.

Andy Borg of Abergavenny competed in the World Championship Interzonals in October. He scored 4/9 against some very tough opposition.
Abergavenny chess club played in the European Chess Club Championships in Slovenia in October. Lloyd Powell draws with Kurajica, Sven Zeidler throws a dead draw away against Lputian. The strength of the opposition was ridiculous - J.Piket on board 5 for one team.
