Hertfordshire Parishes
The
Hammonds of Hatfield: here you will find details of my own ancestry with some
extra information I was recently fortunate to discover that adds a bit of
colour to all the dates and place names.
The
Hammonds of Pirton: as with Westmill, this page contains various references to
another prominent set of related families rather than a complete ancestry.
Feet of Fines: these are records of land
transactions which were originally written on a piece of skin. This was then
divided into three pieces, the lower or 'foot' being filed at the Court of
Common Pleas. They serve to confirm that the persons mentioned were living at
the time, and often give the wives' forenames. A 'messuage' was simply a house
with outbuildings.
Militia
Lists: I have extracted a handful of entries for Westmill and Ware from the series
produced by the Herts Family and Population Society but still need to check the
remaining parishes.
Plans for the future: a list of avenues of
research to follow as they present themselves which I hope to make time for.
Please feel free to make any suggestions if there is a particular area you are
interested in.
Dedicated to my grandfather,
Sidney Robert Charles Hammond who at 81 still seems to manage to walk up and
down a near vertical cliff each day to buy his milk and bread.
