It must be clear that pupils arrive at Breckenbrough for many reasons, but the most common theme is a breakdown within mainstream education. The reintroduction of school routines and working habits must therefore have this understanding in mind. Work set for the sake of work, as for example a Prep Period, is totally inappropriate to the needs of Breckenbrough boys. The priority is to ensure that the pupils are not further alienated from their school work and believe that a sensitive Homework Policy will benefit their education and in the long term their self esteem. In the lower academic years Homework takes place on an informal basis by teachers using extraneous duty hours to extend and enrich the curriculum of the boys. Teachers encourage boys to expand their knowledge and to research and develop areas of interest. Some day and weekly boarders are encouraged with the parents support, to take work home with them. The boys selected are those who are valuing their educational progress and see the additional work in a positive light. All year 7/8 pupils have to go to their unit an hour before bedtime. It is expected that the pupils use this time calmly and constructively. The boys are given the opportunity and encouragement to read and play mathematical games. In Year 11 the policy becomes more prescriptive and with the agreement of the boys have formal periods in the evening with specific staff or with the Head or Deputy primarily for GCSE coursework. |
